In northern Colorado, an unusual sight has captured the attention of locals: rabbits sporting bizarre, tentacle-like horns. These creatures, infected with Shope papillomavirus, show symptoms that are more peculiar than harmful. According to a spokeswoman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Kara Van Hoose, “They are able to clear it from their system on their own.” This natural occurrence has raised eyebrows, but experts assure that the rabbits will likely recover without intervention.
Though the rabbits can heal, they endure periods of discomfort. Some cases could lead to cancer, while the odd horn formations may make feeding difficult, as Van Hoose explains. Residents have been reporting these sightings to the state’s wildlife officials, creating a bit of confusion over how many bunnies are truly affected. “It’s also difficult to say, if we get 10 reports, if it’s 10 different rabbits or if it’s two rabbits that maybe we’re seeing five different times,” she noted.
The disconcerting appearance of these animals has earned them some unflattering nicknames, including “Frankenstein bunnies” and “zombie rabbits.” While the virus linked to these growths has circulated in the wild for some time, it is most frequently encountered during summer months when conditions favor the spread of fleas and ticks. The warmer weather allows the virus to proliferate.
The phenomenon holds layers of intrigue, connecting back to folklore and cultural narratives. Some believe the tentacled rabbits might echo the legend of the jackalope, a mythical creature known in the American West. Just as folklore once captured the imagination with strange tales of hybrid creatures, these rabbits provide an unexpected and eerie twist on nature’s unpredictability.
Fortunately, as autumn approaches and cooler weather sets in, the tentacle horns are expected to regress along with the warmer conditions that fueled their growth. This bizarre episode in nature serves as a reminder of the quirks present in the animal kingdom, leaving residents both fascinated and perhaps a bit unsettled. Though they may have earned an unsettling reputation, the rabbits are expected to return to their usual form, without the monstrous adornments.
