A tragic incident unfolded in Landover, Maryland, when a 35-year-old woman lost her life in a collision involving a stolen vehicle operated by four juveniles. The victim, Shaunte Denise Canty, was driving her car when it was struck after the stolen vehicle ran a red light. The crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, as reported by WTTG-TV.
According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, officers from nearby Seat Pleasant recognized the stolen vehicle, which had been reported taken just four days earlier. Although they observed it, officers were under orders to maintain distance and await backup from a helicopter instead of pursuing the vehicle. Police Chief George Nader explained, “What they were trying to do was keep eyes on it until we got the helicopter in the air that could follow it.” Unfortunately, the situation escalated quickly, leading to the devastating crash.
Canty was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a two-year-old child who suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The juvenile occupants of the stolen car, all males between the ages of 13 and 17, were also injured—three were hospitalized while the fourth was taken into custody. Reports indicate that the stolen car may have been involved in other crimes, including an armed robbery.
Commenting on the incident, Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy noted the somber nature of the day, saying, “Today is just a very sad day in Prince George’s County. Young people have to be in school. They have to be focused on learning and their education, and their future.” Her words underscore the impact of the tragedy, occurring on the first day of school in the county.
The severity of this incident has raised questions about the legal accountability for the juveniles involved. State’s Attorney Tara Jackson emphasized the necessity of holding young people responsible for their actions, saying, “If we don’t, we will continue to see tragedies like the one that we’ve seen today.” Charges are expected to be filed as necessary while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
This heartbreaking event not only highlights the immediate loss of a life but also reflects deeper concerns regarding juvenile crime and accountability. The intersecting factors of education, law enforcement effectiveness, and societal responsibility are at the forefront as communities grapple with the implications of such tragic occurrences.
