If you’re planning a hike, especially in the rugged Catskill Mountains, it’s wise to steer clear of mind-altering substances. Four hikers learned this lesson the hard way after consuming psychedelic mushrooms. Instead of enjoying the natural beauty around them, they became disoriented and had to call for help. Fortunately, rangers were on hand to assist them.
According to reports from the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the hikers lost their bearings after one of them experienced what was described as a “debilitating high.” They called for help around 5 p.m. on August 29, located just less than 1,000 feet off the marked trail. This incident marks the second report of its kind in the Catskill area this year.
When rescuers arrived, conditions were alarming. One hiker was found in the fetal position and unable to communicate. Another was hallucinating, claiming to see a bridge that wasn’t there. Forest Ranger Russell Martin shared his concerns about the situation, noting how such substances impair judgment. He stated, “This was treacherous, steep Catskill terrain… it reduces their ability to make good decisions.” Martin also pointed out that mushrooms are illegal and advised that individuals consuming drugs should always have a sober friend accompanying them.
This event highlights the hidden dangers that come with recreational drug use, especially in unfamiliar or challenging environments. Being in a wilderness area can be risky under normal circumstances, but when you introduce confusion and disorientation into the mix, the risks multiply significantly. With every year, numerous individuals go missing in the wild; this group narrowly avoided joining that grim statistic.
Fortunately, the hikers’ story ended with a timely rescue. However, it serves as a stern reminder of the importance of responsible behavior in the great outdoors. Bonds with nature should foster joy and exploration—not confusion, panic, and calls for help. The experience could have turned catastrophic had they not been located quickly.
While many seek adventure through hiking, it’s essential to prepare adequately. Hiking is an activity that, when approached with the right mindset, can promote well-being and connection to nature. Engaging in responsible habits, such as leaving intoxicants behind, can significantly enhance this experience, ensuring safety and enjoyment. These four hikers were lucky this time, but their story underscores the importance of good judgment for anyone preparing for an outdoor excursion.
