A tribute to Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, has emerged at Utah Valley University following his tragic assassination last week. The dedication prominently features a large American flag above the site where the young activist was gunned down during a student event. Fox News reporter Matt Finn captured the moment, sharing a photo on the social media platform X. He noted, “A large American flag was placed above Charlie Kirk’s site at Utah Valley University.”
Reports from NewsNation included further images of the memorial. Alex Caprariello stated, “A massive American flag now hangs at the exact spot Charlie Kirk was assassinated less than a week ago at Utah Valley University.” This display of patriotism comes as the campus reopened on Monday, after being closed in the wake of Kirk’s murder. Classes were set to resume a few days later, on Wednesday.
Many have returned to the campus to pay their respects. Braden Powell, who works in the IT department at UVU, felt a strong pull to be there in person. He remarked, “It’s been difficult, but I wanted to come back today. They say, go back to the scene of an accident or something to help you process it and get over it.” Powell, who had attended Kirk’s event just days before, expressed appreciation for seeing the memorial. “I thought it was a good chance to just, kind of, pay my respects before I go work on campus,” he added.
The grassy area where Kirk’s table once stood has now been transformed. Concrete has replaced the grass, making way for the flag that now drapes majestically above the spot. Powell echoed a sentiment shared by many, suggesting the need for further recognition of Kirk’s legacy. “I think it would be fitting to do something… a memorial, a statue [or] a plaque, something dedicated to Charlie and to the idea of free speech,” he said.
Kirk, just 31 years old, was fatally shot last Wednesday during a student Q&A session. Authorities have deemed the act a political assassination. The main suspect in the case is 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson from Washington, Utah. Following a day-and-a-half manhunt, Robinson was taken into custody on September 12. He now faces serious charges, including murder, and the possibility of the death penalty.
Reports indicate Robinson confessed to family members and left evidence of his involvement at the scene, including DNA. His personal circumstances were noted in the media, with claims that he was living with a partner identifying as transgender at the time of the incident. The investigation into the motives behind Kirk’s assassination continues.
A memorial service is scheduled for September 21 at State Farm Stadium, the home of the Arizona Cardinals. Kirk’s untimely death has left a marked impact on those who knew him and those who supported his vision for free speech and conservative values. As the community gathers to honor his legacy, the tribute at Utah Valley University stands as a poignant reminder of his dedication to engaging the youth in political discourse.
