President Donald Trump has made a significant announcement regarding the 2026 G20 Summit. The summit will take place at his Doral resort in Miami, Florida. During a news conference in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized the favorable logistics of the location. “It’s going to be a very exciting thing to host the G20,” he affirmed. He noted that this event coincides with the United States’ 250th anniversary next year. This will be the first time in nearly two decades that the U.S. has hosted the G20 summit.
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett will lead the coordination efforts for the summit. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be responsible for organizing the agenda. Trump has been clear that he will not profit from hosting the event. In a social media post from October 2019, he expressed disappointment that his administration’s proposal to host the 2020 G7 summit at Doral faced “media & democrat crazed and irrational hostility,” leading to its cancellation.
Highlighting Florida’s appealing December weather, Trump remarked that Miami Mayor Francis Suarez was enthusiastic about bringing the G20 to the city. Suarez said of the event, “It puts us on the global map,” underscoring the potential economic benefits for the area.
In a strategic decision, Trump confirmed he will not attend the 2025 G20 summit in South Africa, opting instead to send Vice President JD Vance in his place. Such decisions underscore Trump’s focus on domestic priorities and engagements.
The G20, which comprises 19 countries alongside the European Union and the African Union, is a key international forum that addresses global economic and financial issues. The nations involved range from Argentina to the United Kingdom, highlighting a mix of both developed and developing countries.
Trump has already taken steps towards ensuring a successful summit, inviting Polish President Karol Nawrocki for discussions at the White House earlier this week. The last time the United States hosted a full G20 Summit was back in 2009, during the Obama administration in Pittsburgh.
With this announcement, Trump seeks to bolster not only national pride but also economic prospects tied to the high-profile G20 Summit.
