Virginia’s school board is under fire following the suspension of three students after a locker room incident involving a transgender student. Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, along with candidates and local Republicans, expressed their discontent this week. The controversy began when parents reported their sons faced disciplinary action for voicing unease over a transgender student, who identified as male, using the boys’ facilities.
The situation escalated into a Title IX investigation, spearheaded by Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, which has now been referred to federal authorities. State Delegate Geary Higgins, R-Waterford, condemned the school board for what he described as refusing to acknowledge the gravity of the issue. He criticized them for “doubling and tripling down on their illegal policy,” warning that this is happening at the expense of taxpayers and, crucially, the safety of children.
Higgins, the last Republican state lawmaker in Loudoun County, articulated a clear call to action. He disapproved of what he termed “science-denying nonsense” prevalent in discussions about transgender policies and expressed frustration that the school board is willing to risk educational funding. He remarked, “The Loudoun County School Board’s obstinance is truly an embarrassment to our county,” adding that it jeopardizes students and betrays parents while undermining dedicated educators.
The boys involved in the incident, Higgins noted, have become victims of the board’s policies. Their punishment for feeling uncomfortable—being labeled as sexual harassers—is intolerable. “They have been punished and defamed… simply because they were uncomfortable with a female watching them change,” he stated. The board’s policies are denounced as a threat not only to boys but also to vulnerable girls who could potentially face similar situations.
Earle-Sears echoed these sentiments, advocating for the need to protect children’s privacy. She articulated a straightforward message: “We want to ensure that every child has privacy. Every child deserves that privacy.” Her remarks resonate deeply with many parents who want children to feel safe in what should be private settings. “If we don’t want that as adults, imagine our very vulnerable children…” she further elaborated.
Higgins also reflected on the changing landscape in Loudoun County, which has shifted from being predominantly Republican to a more liberal stance over the past several years. He pinpointed 2018 as the turning point when the school board lost its conservative majority, resulting in deteriorating educational standards and policies that have invited controversy.
In response, the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) defended its actions. A spokesperson stated that the decision to suspend students was not simply about discomfort and emphasized the rigorous standards involved in launching a Title IX investigation. This explanation has not satisfied criticism from parents and state officials who argue that educational integrity and the safety of students should be paramount.
As the debate unfolds, it reflects a deeper conflict between traditional values regarding privacy and evolving policies meant to address diverse identities in school environments. The voices of those opposing the current direction of the Loudoun County School Board are ringing louder in the face of challenges that many believe threaten both educational standards and the welfare of children.
