Violence erupted during homecoming festivities at two historically Black colleges and universities, leading to tragic outcomes over the weekend. At Lincoln University in Chester County, Pennsylvania, gunfire claimed the life of a 25-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware. This incident, according to WHP-TV, left the victim, identified as Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. In addition to the deadly shooting, 11 others were injured—most are expected to recover.

Lincoln University President Brenda Allen shared her sorrow over the incident in a statement, describing it as a heartbreak for students, families, and the community at large. “What occurred last night was tragic for our students, our families, and our community,” she noted. The community’s grief is palpable, reflecting a broader sense of loss as gun violence seems to perpetually shadow American society. In a solemn acknowledgment, Allen pointed out, “Gun violence happens far too often in our country, and we are heartbroken that Lincoln University and its students are among the latest victims of such senseless violence.” Classes were promptly canceled on October 27 as a result of the shooting, demonstrating the immediate impact on the students and educational environment.

Simultaneously, another shooting incident was reported near Howard University in Washington, D.C. While this incident did not involve any members of the Howard University community, one of the injured was from Morgan State University, another institution of higher learning within the HBCU network. Authorities reported that five individuals—four adults and one teenager—were injured, but their wounds were not considered life-threatening, which offers a slight relief amidst a chilling series of events.

D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith provided updates on the situation, confirming the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of three firearms near the shooting site. Despite the proximity of this incident to Howard University, the school confirmed in a statement that none of its students were involved. The university reassured community members that their safety remained a top priority, stating, “The safety and well-being of the Howard University community is our highest priority.” In response to recent violence, Howard University implemented enhanced security measures over the weekend to maintain a secure environment for all.

The overarching narrative connecting these incidents highlights an unsettling trend. The Root, an African-American online magazine, emphasized this growing concern, noting a pattern of violence during HBCU homecoming events. “Among the jokes and quippy TikToks is something darker,” the outlet observed, expressing that many Black Americans now confront feelings of unsafety during what should be celebratory occasions. The tension inherent in these incidents raises questions about the cultural and societal factors leading to this violence and why it disproportionately impacts settings meant for joy and unity.

In summary, the violence at Lincoln University and the overall environment of fear at HBCUs point to a troubling reality. While community leaders and educational institutions work to address safety concerns, the persistent shadow of violence continues to linger over celebrations that should emphasize pride and togetherness.
