Rhode Island’s Barrington Public Schools now finds itself entangled in a serious controversy after a social studies teacher, Benjamin Fillo, posted an inflammatory TikTok celebrating the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. The video showed Fillo mocking Kirk’s passing, saying, “the big man… thought he proved how tough he was with his words,” followed by a chilling, “Bye Charlie!” This blatant disregard for human life raises serious questions about the influence such a figure can have in a classroom.

Following a public outcry, the school district placed Fillo on paid leave and removed him as co-president of the local teachers’ union. However, the consequences of his comments reach beyond administrative actions. A student from Fillo’s class reported that he made shocking remarks during lessons, stating Republicans would support slavery. Additionally, there were discrepancies in how student work was graded based on political views, raising concerns about impartiality in educational environments. Such behavior is not just unprofessional; it is detrimental to students’ learning experiences.

Parents are understandably outraged. Nicole Solas, a concerned parent, took action by requesting access to Fillo’s curriculum over the past 15 years. She wanted to verify if Fillo’s disturbing opinions might have infiltrated his teaching over time. Her commitment to ensuring her child—and others—are not exposed to such toxic viewpoints is commendable.

However, in a troubling twist, the school district cited exorbitant costs—$116,000—to fulfill Solas’ request. They claimed it would take 70 hours to compile Fillo’s emails dating back to 2016 and over 7,000 hours to sift through 157 courses stored on three different systems. These figures were described as “prohibitive and facially unreasonable” by Solas’ attorney, James McGlone. The district’s inflated numbers seem aimed at dissuading scrutiny, suggesting they prioritize protecting their staff rather than addressing valid parental concerns.

Solas seeks transparency for a reason. Political tensions have been exacerbated in recent years, particularly since the 2016 spotlight on contentious figures like Kirk. If Fillo’s remarks reflect his curriculum over a prolonged period, it may indicate a broader issue within the educational system itself. The risks posed to students are real and should not be dismissed lightly.

The situation in Barrington is not an isolated incident. Following Kirk’s death, other teachers, like AnneMarie Donahue from Wachusett Regional High School and Brittany Reid from AACountySchools, also made troubling comments that celebrate violence and show a lack of compassion. Donahue posted that “We’re NOT offering sympathy” shortly after Kirk’s assassination, while Reid declared that she was “celebrating” the event. Such sentiments from educators are disheartening and demonstrate a trend of educators engaging in political discourse that may directly influence their students.

The overarching message here is clear: school districts must prioritize student well-being over the interests of individual teachers. The situation unfolding in Barrington calls for accountability and an examination of the ethical responsibilities of educators. Parents desiring a safe, impartial, and supportive learning environment for their children should not have to fight against the very institutions meant to protect and educate them. It’s becoming increasingly evident that in light of these troubling incidents, homeschooling may indeed be a viable option for concerned families.
