Two top military leaders from the U.S. are set to visit Puerto Rico to engage with service members and recognize their contributions. This visit, scheduled for November 24, 2025, underscores the military’s commitment to supporting operations throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman David L. Isom will meet with troops stationed in Puerto Rico, as well as sailors in the Caribbean, according to a Pentagon memo released on Sunday.

The upcoming visit follows a similar trip in September when Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Caine showed appreciation to the armed forces training in Puerto Rico. During that visit, Hegseth spoke to nearly 300 service members at Muñiz Air Base, praising them as “American warriors.” His remarks emphasized the importance of their roles and the superiority of the U.S. military’s readiness and equipment.

This renewed attention from top military officials comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Caribbean Sea. Increased naval operations aim to disrupt the flow of illicit drugs, particularly from Venezuela, aligning with the broader objectives of the Trump administration. Recently, Hegseth announced Operation Southern Spear, targeting narco-terror networks across Latin America. He asserted, “This mission defends our Homeland, removes narco-terrorists from our Hemisphere, and secures our Homeland from the drugs that are killing our people.”

Since the operation’s launch, U.S. forces have executed a series of precision strikes against vessels linked to terrorist organizations engaged in drug trafficking. Reports indicate that these operations have resulted in the destruction of many ships associated with the Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela and the Ejército de Liberación Nacional from Colombia. Estimated casualties from these military actions amount to 82 suspected narco-terrorists, demonstrating a significant commitment to countering drug trafficking in the region.

Furthermore, the operations haven’t just targeted large vessels. They have included strikes against submersibles and even fishing boats, indicating a broad scope of engagement. The military’s approach has drawn international attention; for instance, a recent attack on an ELN-linked vessel sparked criticism from Colombia’s president after three fatalities occurred.

The visits of military leaders like Caine and Isom, alongside campaigns like Operation Southern Spear, illustrate an aggressive strategy to bolster security in the Western Hemisphere. Such efforts reflect ongoing challenges posed by transnational criminal organizations and the necessary U.S. response to them.

As the military continues its focus on the Caribbean, the impacts of these operations will likely shape regional dynamics, potentially altering the balance of power among drug trafficking organizations. The support from high-ranking officials certainly boosts morale among U.S. troops and highlights their crucial role in maintaining stability and safety in a complex geopolitical landscape.
