What does Veterans Day represent for Americans? The typical narrative often paints veterans as individuals in need—physically and emotionally broken, requiring care and support. While it’s true that some veterans face real challenges that warrant our attention and assistance, this can overshadow a broader truth. Many veterans and their families embody a sense of purpose and resilience that is often underappreciated in the conversation of gratitude we extend on this day.

A retired veteran with a rich history, having dedicated nearly 23 years to service, has transitioned into a role as a storyteller. This individual has spent 15 years writing and performing plays about military experiences, particularly focusing on the Afghanistan War. With insights gathered from performing in various cities and engaging with diverse audiences, it’s clear that the military community possesses skills that can bridge stark divides in today’s political landscape.

Three impactful veteran leaders serve as prime examples of this potential. Ben Owen faced a tumultuous start to his journey. A medical discharge led him to homelessness and substance abuse, nearly derailing his life. However, through determination and the support of the community, Owen chose to turn his past into a force for good. He now leads the nonprofit organization We Fight Monsters, reshaping South Memphis by collaborating with law enforcement to dismantle the drug trade and replace it with hope.

Elisha “Perk” Perkins’ journey also reflects the power of resilience. An Army communications officer whose vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb, Perkins faced unimaginable loss and subsequent health battles. Instead of succumbing to despair, she turned her pain into purpose. Inspired by her bond with a dog she trained, she founded Pop Smoke for Vets, an organization that now trains service dogs for veterans, providing essential support to those in need.

Kari Ellis’ story echoes themes of survival and advocacy. Growing up on a Chippewa Indian Reservation and facing personal tragedies, she initially descended into despair after losing her husband to suicide. Yet, with the help of her community, she emerged as a leader in Task Force Pineapple. Here, she shares her experiences to advocate for suicide prevention, actively connecting with other veterans.

These narratives illustrate that veterans are not solely the sum of their struggles. Many possess invaluable skills and a commitment to serve, making them powerful allies in improving communities. While some may forge their own paths, others could benefit immensely from meaningful interactions with civilians. It’s crucial to look past the familiar “thank you for your service” and recognize the diverse strengths veterans bring to the table.

Engagement with our veteran population could forge stronger communities. Many veterans stand as national assets, ready to lend their expertise. A collaborative effort between veterans and civilians promises a brighter future, and it’s this partnership that holds the key to addressing the challenges ahead. Veterans Day should be a moment to celebrate not only sacrifice but also the potential veterans and their families bring to the nation.

In reflecting on this day, it is vital to acknowledge the dual nature of military service. Veterans are shaped by their experiences, triumphs, and heartaches. They are equipped with skills that can nurture our communities and lead us forward. The challenge before us is to foster connections that allow these veterans to thrive, ultimately creating a shared legacy for future generations.
