Brad Lander has launched his congressional campaign, quickly earning the support of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. This endorsement comes as Lander challenges Rep. Dan Goldman for the seat in New York’s 10th Congressional District. Lander’s decision to run follows Goldman’s earlier refusal to back Mamdani’s mayoral bid, creating a clear divide in the Democratic Party.

Lander played a critical role in Mamdani’s surprise victory in the Democratic primary. The two candidates effectively used ranked-choice voting to consolidate their support against prominent figures like former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Lander has earned praise from Mamdani, who highlighted Lander’s “unwavering principles” and his dedication to those in need. “He has been a trusted ally and partner of mine,” Mamdani stated, signaling confidence in Lander’s ability to represent New Yorkers.

The launch video for Lander’s campaign has a decidedly casual tone, evoking a Mr. Rogers-style warmth… yet it is not without its barbs. He took aim at Goldman for aligning himself with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and bemoaned the influence of rich individuals buying political positions.

Goldman’s camp has countered Lander’s assertions. Spokesperson Maddy Rose defended the congressman’s record, saying, “Dan is focused on stopping the Trump administration from what they’re doing to immigrant families in his district right now.” Goldman’s moderate stance seems strategically aimed at appealing to a wide range of voters, especially in a typically blue district.

Tensions exist within the party, especially regarding endorsement dynamics. Goldman withheld support from Mamdani over apprehensions about safeguarding Jewish New Yorkers, a contentious topic as New York balances identities and interests within its immigrant and ethnic communities.

Although Lander may be aligning himself with progressive ideals, he faces significant challenges in a political environment where Democrats have struggled to coalesce around a unified message. The party aims to win back congressional control in an effort to counteract Trump’s agenda. While Goldman maintains a secure position, Lander is attempting to shift the conversation left, pivoting on issues arising from the war in Gaza and New York’s recent immigration policies.

Mamdani has been vocal about unauthorized immigrant rights, recently releasing a video informing New Yorkers of their legal rights during ICE encounters. This activism mirrors the sentiments within Lander’s campaign, which downplays more moderate views and emphasizes direct action. Earlier this year, Lander himself was arrested by DHS agents during a protest against ICE, an event that he has prominently featured in his campaign launch. “When ICE agents started kidnapping our neighbors, I fought back,” Lander declared, invoking visceral imagery to resonate with voters.

Interestingly, while Lander has aligned closely with Mamdani, he did not secure an official role in the new administration. This lack of a City Hall position may have given Lander the necessary space to launch his congressional bid, leveraging Mamdani’s momentum to bolster his visibility and appeal as a progressive voice.

Meanwhile, other allies of Mamdani seem to be facing hurdles. New York City Councilmember Chi Ossé has stepped back from his own congressional bid against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, citing a lack of support from influential groups like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). “Exploring the possibility of this run was important,” Ossé reflected in his withdrawal, underscoring how key endorsements can dictate the political landscape.

The political scene in New York reflects broader national dynamics, where factions within the Democratic Party wrestle for prominence amid ongoing challenges posed by the Republican agenda. Lander’s campaign is certainly one to watch as he navigates the currents of party politics, alliances, and the complex interplay of progressive versus moderate ideologies. The outcome of his contest against Goldman may very well shape the landscape of local and national politics for years to come.
