Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is about to step into the spotlight for her first significant challenge in front of the House of Representatives.

This hearing, taking place Thursday, centers on worldwide threats and is an annual event that has faced several years of neglect. Noem, alongside National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent and FBI National Security Branch Operations Director Michael Glasheen, is expected to tackle critical issues facing the nation.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino expressed anticipation for Noem’s testimony on various pressing topics, including border security, drug trafficking, and growing cybersecurity concerns. “I’m sure she’ll talk about border, I’m sure she’ll talk about drugs, I’m sure she’ll talk about China,” he said, emphasizing the hearing’s importance and his approval of her participation.

This hearing comes at a tense moment. Lawmakers from both parties are increasingly wary of foreign adversaries like Venezuela, Iran, and China, who might seek to exploit gaps in U.S. national security. Garbarino articulated a keen concern for the threats posed by terrorism. Among his statements, he noted that thousands of known and suspected terrorists had crossed the southern border in recent years, although he acknowledged that border security has been bolstered recently. “Luckily, it’s been closed up, but they’re still here,” he cautioned, looking forward to insights from the FBI regarding the safety measures in place.

On the Democratic side, Noem will likely face scrutiny regarding the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents under the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Rep. Bennie Thompson, the committee’s top Democrat, voiced his frustrations about a lack of transparency from the administration regarding immigration matters. “We don’t get much information, in the interim, from the administration,” he lamented, highlighting the tendency of official communications to lack substantive detail. Thompson has expressed concerns about how ICE interacts with the Hispanic community, labeling their treatment as “total disrespect,” and insists that Noem must address these issues head-on during her testimony.

Adding to the complexity of the hearing, Axios reported a clash between Noem and border czar Tom Homan, although both remain secure in their positions for now. This backdrop of internal dissent within the administration could overshadow Noem’s performance.

The stakes are high for Noem as she navigates a politically charged environment. Her ability to articulate the administration’s position on national security and immigration policies will be scrutinized not only for its content but also for its delivery amid bipartisan skepticism. As the national security landscape evolves, this hearing serves as a litmus test for Noem’s effectiveness and the administration’s broader strategy in addressing these multifaceted threats to the nation.
