Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is taking firm action against the surge of illegal immigrants holding non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs), stressing the safety risks posed to American highways. His comments come in the wake of a tragic incident linked to a driver who, after receiving a CDL in California, was involved in a fatal accident on Florida’s Turnpike.

In a recent statement, Duffy highlighted the gravity of the situation. “The problem is that you endanger the safety of everyday Americans who use our roadways,” he said. His department has launched a crackdown, warning states that failure to comply with licensing regulations could lead to financial penalties. This focus on safety reflects a commitment not only to the integrity of transportation systems but also to the well-being of the public.

Earlier this year, an Indian national, who was authorized to drive commercially but lacked proper vetting, caused the deadly crash. Following this incident, Duffy expanded efforts to address compliance with licensing regulations. In Pennsylvania, officials discovered that illegal immigrants were issued non-domiciled CDLs without raising any red flags in background checks. Duffy noted that under previous administrations, “millions of people have come into the country,” and many were granted licenses despite being unqualified.

Duffy’s department has cited troubling numbers. For example, California has revoked 17,000 non-domiciled CDLs. In New York, more than half of the issued non-domiciled licenses were deemed illegal. “We are going to use every resource, every tool that we have at DOT, to make sure that we have the right people on our road that are well qualified,” Duffy asserted, pointing out that many of these drivers could pose a risk not only on highways but also in driving school buses, potentially endangering children.

The Secretary’s remarks underscore a clear message: priority lies in ensuring the safety of all Americans. Duffy’s approach contrasts sharply with the previous management, which he characterized as neglectful, pointing out serious lapses in regulatory oversight. “We 100% under Donald Trump’s leadership will,” he declared, emphasizing a commitment to maximizing roadway safety by holding states accountable.

Duffy also expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of his friend, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, recently murdered during a Utah event. He reflected on the significance of connecting with younger generations at AmericaFest, celebrating Kirk’s contribution to the conservative movement. “It couldn’t be more thrilling and exciting,” Duffy said, highlighting his belief in the importance of engaging young people in these vital conversations.

As holiday travel peaks, Duffy noted the considerable challenges faced by air traffic controllers and workers in the Department of Transportation. Reflecting on the busy travel period, he encouraged travelers to remain patient, acknowledging that “There could be some mishaps because it’s so busy.” Ultimately, he reminded travelers that safety comes first. “I don’t want your flight delayed but I’ll take a delayed flight over an unsafe flight every day of the week,” he asserted.

Duffy’s updated policies and efforts signal a robust response to pressing issues involving safety, illegal immigration, and the integrity of the transportation system, reinforcing a commitment to the American public’s welfare.
