Avelo Airlines has decided to cancel its contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a move that reflects the shifting dynamics between private companies and political pressures. Less than a year after signing up to help with deportation flights, the airline will shut down its operational base in Mesa, Arizona, by the end of the month. A company spokesperson stated, “The program provided short-term benefits but ultimately did not deliver enough consistent and predictable revenue to overcome its operational complexity and costs.” This indicates that the decision was driven not only by public outcry but also by economic realities, which often take a back seat in more contentious discussions.

CEO Andrew Levy pointed to “political controversy” as a significant factor in the decision to terminate the contract. According to Levy, moving part of the fleet into a government program seemed like a path to financial stability. However, it soon placed the airline at the center of heated political debate, a predicament many companies would prefer to avoid. “We moved a portion of our fleet into a government program which promised more financial stability but placed us in the center of a political controversy,” he noted.

The cancellation follows a strong campaign by left-wing activists who sought to damage Avelo’s reputation and discourage patrons from using their service. For instance, Democratic state representative Seth Miller launched a campaign near the Tweed New Haven Airport, urging travelers to reconsider their choices. His message was clear: “Does your vacation support their deportation? Just say AvelNO!” Such grassroots efforts are gaining traction and highlight a growing trend where public sentiment can effectively influence corporate decisions.

Many politicians applauded Avelo’s move, framing it as a victory for their side. Local politicians took to social media channels to express their satisfaction. One compared the achievement to a broader movement, stating, “If we can do this now, imagine what we can do when we bring our movement to Congress.” Such sentiments underscore a confidence among some groups that they can exert significant influence on policy and business practices alike.

This cancellation does not signify an end to deportations by any means. However, it shows one company backing away from its involvement, possibly fearing the repercussions of further association with ICE. Given the ongoing climate of opposition toward deportation activities, more businesses seem to be reconsidering partnerships with federal agencies. Just recently, a Hilton property in Minneapolis refused a reservation for ICE agents, asserting that they found “information about immigration work” connected to their names. This decision suggests a rising willingness to confront federal agencies based on public pressure.

Hilton later reprimanded the hotel involved and reaffirmed its commitment to preventing such discrimination. “After further investigation online, we have found information about immigration work connected to your name, and we will be canceling your reservation,” staff wrote in their email to the agents. The situation exemplifies significant concern among businesses about their public image when playing a role in contentious governmental policies.

With ICE primarily relying on chartered and commercial flights for their deportation operations, Avelo’s exit sheds light on the tensions between corporate interests and activist campaigns. As ICE ramps up activities nationwide, the growing reluctance from companies like Avelo and now Hilton suggests a shifting landscape where political pressures can lead to tangible business consequences. The trend signals not only a response to ground-level activism but also a potentially broader reevaluation of how companies align with government policies, especially those that spark passionate public debate.
