The incident occurred at approximately 9:36 p.m. amid ongoing unrest as leftist and Antifa protestors gathered at a nearby U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. Officers were dispatched to an area near the intersection of Northeast 17th Avenue and Northeast Clackamas Street. During the encounter, an individual opened fire, striking two officers. “It was literally that brief of an encounter,” Detective Jon Richardson stated, underscoring the sudden and violent nature of the confrontation.
The Portland Police have shared a description of the suspect, identifying him as a Caucasian male in his mid-30s with facial hair. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap and a black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, along with black pants and shoes. The suspect is suspected to be armed with both a knife and a handgun, raising serious concerns for public safety. The police have urged anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact authorities, emphasizing that he is considered armed and dangerous.
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson highlighted, “The dangers of the job,” in the wake of this incident. He conveyed gratitude for the officers who serve to protect the community. “We’re very concerned for the officers that were shot,” Wilson noted. He expressed relief that the officers were reported to be in stable condition and extended wishes for their speedy recovery.
