Hundreds of protesters stormed the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) last Friday, causing major disruptions for travelers. The protest, mainly organized by anti-ICE activists, included about 100 clergy members who sought to voice their opposition to ICE operations in Minnesota. Their actions came despite frigid temperatures that dipped below zero.

Reports indicate that the crowd blocked key access points, much to the frustration of passengers who were already facing delays due to an approaching storm. One participant tweeted that Minnesota, under the leadership of Tim Walz and Ilhan Omar, has become a “lawless mess.”

Videos circulated online showed members of the protest being arrested, with the group “Faith in Minnesota” claiming that over 100 clergy and faith leaders were taken into custody during what they termed a “peaceful, prayerful resistance.” Their message, amplified through social media, advocated for airlines such as Delta and Signature Aviation to oppose ICE activities in the state. The group highlighted that more than 2,000 deportations have occurred through MSP and noted the distressing reality that workers had been detained by ICE while they went about their daily routines.

Law enforcement confirmed that over 100 arrests were made, although those detained were quickly released after being issued misdemeanors for trespassing and failing to comply with officers. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) stated they had worked with event organizers ahead of the protest to create a safe environment for both protesters and travelers. They had set a location and a cap on participants to maintain order. However, when these terms were exceeded, MSP Airport Police had to take action to restore public safety.

Ahead of the demonstration, airlines advised passengers to arrive three hours early due to planned protests. This action connected to larger criticisms of ICE’s “Operation Metro Surge,” which targets criminal illegal aliens in the Twin Cities. This operation has led to the arrest of individuals involved in serious offenses, including violent crimes.

The protest at MSP Airport reflects heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in Minnesota. The bold actions taken by the demonstrators, even in harsh weather, illustrate their commitment to the cause. Given the scale of the arrests and the significant impact on travelers, this incident raises questions about public safety, the limits of protest, and the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement. The aftereffects of such demonstrations linger as the community grapples with both the implications of immigration policies and the methods employed by groups opposing these strategies. This event surely sets a precedent for future protests, especially in relation to the visibility and reach of activist groups within sensitive public spaces.
