The scenes outside President Donald Trump’s recent State of the Union address provide a stark view of the current state of the Democratic Party. While chaos reigned inside the House chamber, the Democrats who chose to skip the event were not much better. Their absence from the speech, usually a time for political unity, showcased a disjointed response filled with odd behavior and questionable choices.

More than 50 Democratic lawmakers opted to forgo the tradition and engage in counterprogramming events. This strategy intended to position the party in opposition to Trump’s vision, but it quickly devolved into a display of eccentricities. As pointed out by The Wall Street Journal, these alternatives not only failed to garner solid support but also distracted from any coherent messaging the Democrats might have hoped to deliver.

Events such as the aptly titled “State of the Swamp,” hosted by celebrities like Robert De Niro and Jim Acosta, turned into showcases of absurdity. Among the attendees were senators and representatives, many of whom did not appear to have their priorities straight, given the presence of individuals in giraffe costumes and frog attire boasting about their arrests. This was hardly the serious political opposition one would expect during a significant presidential address.

The objective behind these protest events was to create a united front for the upcoming midterm elections. But judging from the bizarre spectacles that unfolded, the Democrats appeared to be fumbling their message. Historical context was not lost on observers either. Last year’s response, marked by Al Green’s infamous heckling, left many questioning the party’s effectiveness. His ejection from the chamber offered no promise of improvement for Democrats appearing outside.

Testimonies from the events offered little assurance. Representative Dan Goldman, for instance, took time away from the State of the Union to propagate what many saw as unfounded conspiracy theories about the future of elections, thus losing potential credibility among voters looking for substantive debate. The focus on his peculiar rhetoric did not help with his party’s standing.

The People’s State of the Union, another of the counter-events, featured former MSNBC anchor Joy Reid trying her hand at a musical performance, rather than discussing real policy issues affecting everyday Americans. Alongside Reid, other voices emerged, including Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal, who directed her attention to controversial topics regarding “trans kids.” Critics noted that her passionate outcry could be perceived as prioritizing an agenda over children’s well-being, highlighting the disconnect many see between party leadership and voter priorities.

A noteworthy interaction occurred when a pro-Trump crasher interrupted proceedings at one of the Democratic events, calling out a prominent senator. Such confrontations pointed to a simmering division not only between parties but also within the Democratic camp itself. While there were attempts to display unity, it was evident that factions were at odds with each other on strategy and effectiveness.

The attendance at these counter-protests demonstrated that the Democrats might not be generating the support they believe they have. Reports indicated that the crowds were modest at best. One attendee lamented, “There are probably 75 people in this crowd, and I would say 35 of them are reporters.” Such low turnout underscored that viewers might prefer watching the action inside the Capitol rather than attending unconventional protests outside. Ultimately, the spectacle revealed a party grasping for relevance and clarity amidst their opposition to Trump.

The antics displayed by Democrats during the State of the Union reveal a significant divide within the party. Their counterprogramming events, rather than presenting a solid front, devolved into distractions that may hurt their chances in the midterms. As the current political landscape develops, it is clear that Democrats must reassess their strategies and address the serious concerns voters have, rather than showcasing peculiar performances that reinforce misconceptions about their priorities. The chaos within their own ranks may not bode well as they move forward.
