Three members of Congress from Florida are taking action against the Castro regime in Cuba, demanding the Trump administration cut off commercial support that remains. Representatives Carlos Giménez, Mario Díaz-Balart, and María Elvira Salazar are urging the shutdown of export licenses that allow luxury goods to flow into Cuba, insisting that much of this trade benefits the regime rather than the Cuban people.

As the situation intensifies, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has issued a stark warning, stating that the country is “close to failing.” Reports indicate that oil supplies could run out in just 15 days due to U.S. tariffs targeting exporters. While the Cuban leader condemned the actions as “genocidal” and “fascist,” the Florida lawmakers view them as a necessary step in undermining the oppressive regime.

The lawmakers sent a letter to high-ranking officials in the Commerce and Treasury Departments, expressing their deep concern over U.S. businesses engaging in activities that conflict with sanctions aimed at curtailing support for the Castro regime. They cited the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act of 1996, which aims to prevent economic support to Havana until significant democratic progress is made. This law represents a strict stance against the Cuban government, highlighting a long-standing commitment to imposing sanctions.

“The first section of the LIBERTAD Act clearly states that U.S. sanctions are meant to deny economic support to Havana,” the legislators noted in their correspondence. They argued that despite these mandates, transactions benefiting the regime and its military-controlled entities continue due to certain licenses that have been issued.

Latin America policy analyst Andrés Martínez-Fernández pointed out that even goods that appear intended for civilians often end up enriching the regime. He emphasized the irony that items such as luxury cars and construction materials, which should be for the populace, instead enhance the living conditions of government officials.

In their demand, the congress members are calling for an extensive review of all licenses that authorize trade with Cuban state entities. They insist on revoking any agreements that provide economic benefits to these regime-controlled entities, aligning actions with the restrictions mandated by the LIBERTAD Act. More scrutiny is needed for future licensing requests, according to their message, to ensure adherence to U.S. law.

The lawmakers conveyed their strong support for President Trump’s and Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s actions against the Cuban regime. They expressed hope that the U.S. government will rigorously enforce sanctions. As pressure mounts, the messages from Florida’s congressional representatives signal a commitment to upholding U.S. policy against the Cuban dictatorship, and they eagerly await a response from the Commerce Department regarding their concerns.
