The alarming decline in social studies education in American public schools raises serious concerns about the fundamental understanding of U.S. history and civic duties among young Americans. A long-time libertarian and former classroom teacher addresses this crisis, noting the critical importance of how educators present information to their students.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, commonly referred to as the Nation’s Report Card, test scores are telling an unsettling story. The civics score for eighth graders fell for the first time since the assessment’s inception in 1998, dropping two points from 2018. Similarly, scores in U.S. history showed a five-point decrease compared to 2018 and a nine-point decrease from 2014. Geography scores took a hit as well, marking the lowest average since the test’s establishment. These statistics reflect a broader issue: students today are coming out of the school system with a troubling lack of knowledge about basic civics and history.

However, the issue extends beyond mere metrics. A significant worry is the distorted perception many young Americans have about socialism, often shaped by their teachers’ political opinions. A survey conducted in 2025 revealed that over half of voters aged 18 to 39 felt that their educators favored democratic socialism during their time in school. This bias is not merely perception, as a majority of social studies teachers self-identify with leftist ideals, reinforcing the narrative that public schools indoctrinate students with socialist viewpoints. Many parents corroborate this concern, sensing a leftward tilt in the education their children receive.

Polling data reinforces this troubling trend. Many young Americans express positive attitudes toward socialism and government interventions. For instance, over half of Americans aged 18 to 39 want a democratic socialist to run for president in 2028. A sizeable portion supports concepts like government-run grocery stores and nationwide rent freezes, highlighting a growing enthusiasm for socialist policies among the youth. Furthermore, a Cato poll indicated that 62 percent of Americans aged 18 to 29 hold favorable views of socialism, with 34 percent extending that sentiment to communism. With college students, the numbers are even more striking: 67 percent have positive or neutral feelings towards socialism.

In the face of such widespread adoption of these ideologies, there must be a concerted effort to correct the narrative presented in classrooms. The necessity for educational institutions to teach the realities of socialism has never been more urgent. State legislatures must take charge of this effort, ensuring that the truth about socialism is included in the curriculum.

Florida has taken the lead with a legislative initiative aimed at addressing these concerns. In 2024, the state passed a law mandating that students learn about the dangers of communism. This was further reinforced in November 2025 when the Florida Board of Education approved new standards designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the oppressive nature of communist ideologies. Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas emphasized the importance of these standards, asserting that as communist ideologies become more prevalent, it is vital for students to comprehend the severe failures and human suffering that these regimes bring.

The narrative is clear: the stakes for future generations are high. Socialist indoctrination within public schools poses a clear danger, and immediate action is necessary to counteract this trend. Educators must prioritize an accurate education that fosters an appreciation for individual freedoms and a comprehensive understanding of history. The need for truth in education has never been more critical.
