One of the shining moments during President Donald Trump’s recent State of the Union address was his recognition of America’s gold medal-winning men’s hockey team. Such an occasion should have fostered unity and national pride. Instead, it became another opportunity for the media to sow discord. The media’s reaction to this event highlights a troubling trend where any association with Trump is met with ridicule rather than appreciation.

During the Olympics, many reporters seemed more focused on creating controversy than celebrating American athletes. They repeatedly questioned Olympians about how they could represent the United States with Trump in office, yet similar scrutiny was notably absent when Barack Obama or Joe Biden was president. This double standard is glaring, demonstrating a bias that undermines athletes’ achievements.

Take the CBS Evening News segment with USA hockey goalie Jeremy Swayman, for example. Reporter Jonah Kaplan pressed him about Trump’s lighthearted locker-room call with the men’s team, including a quip about inviting the women’s team to join. The team laughed at the joke, but the left took umbrage, painting it as a major offense. Kaplan pushed Swayman to express regret over that natural reaction, urging him to admit wrongness instead of letting the moment stand as a bit of humor. Swayman and women’s hockey player Kelly Panek both attempted to set the record straight, emphasizing mutual respect, but the media’s desire to create division overshadowed their sincere efforts.

Similarly, when Hilary Knight, captain of the women’s hockey team, was interviewed on “Good Morning America,” she dismissed any suggestion that the women’s team would accept an invitation to the White House. Her comment about the president’s call being “distasteful” appeared more focused on reinforcing a negative narrative than on celebrating sportsmanship. Co-host Robin Roberts reinforced this stance, suggesting the women had faced severe mistreatment.

The media coverage continued to stoke the flames. CBS and ABC featured multiple segments discussing the men’s team’s supposed insensitivity and the fallout from their laughter. Knight’s remarks, which sought to clarify the bonds between the teams, were twisted into a narrative that positioned the men as villains, despite their demonstrated support for women’s hockey.

As for the presence of FBI Director Kash Patel celebrating with the men, that became another point of contention, with the networks airing significant coverage to emphasize the unseemly implications of his attendance. It seems any positive moment is met with skepticism and scrutiny when Trump is involved, regardless of the circumstances.

In stark contrast, when Obama or Biden celebrated champions in the past, the media response was far more lenient and supportive. The continual criticism from outlets regarding Trump’s interactions with Olympic athletes reflects a troubling hostility toward any unifying moment under his administration.

Even the women’s hockey team, which cited prior commitments for declining a White House invitation, was spun into a story of snubbing the president, as if that was the primary takeaway from their decision. The narrative twisted further, with NPR even eliciting commentary from a 90s rapper, Flavor Flav, expressing his discontent over the alleged snub while missing the core story of athletic achievement.

The response from certain segments of the media exemplifies a commitment to partisanship over patriotism, shunning moments that should inspire pride among Americans. When the men’s hockey team celebrated their gold medal victory, it was expected to be a time for national pride, but instead, it turned into an opportunity for divisive narratives. The media’s eagerness to attack can overshadow genuine support and congratulatory moments, revealing a reluctance to allow any occasion under Trump’s administration to be marked by unity.

In the end, moments like these should reflect the strength and resilience of American athletes. Still, the media’s obsession with generating controversy sadly detracts from what should have been a purely celebratory moment.
