House Republicans recently gathered in South Florida to strategize for the upcoming midterm elections. Amid their discussions, Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina took decisive action, heading to the Middle East to assist with evacuation efforts amid the escalating conflict involving Israel and Iran. Mace learned that a family from her home state was stranded in the dangerous region, prompting her to say, “When your people are stranded in a war zone, the only answer worthy of the office, worthy of our state, worthy of our country, is to get them out.”
After ensuring the family’s safe return to South Carolina, Mace continued her mission in the Middle East. Working alongside Grey Bull Rescue, a Tampa-based group led by military veterans, she aimed to evacuate more Americans facing peril. The situation for U.S. citizens in the region has grown dire, with flight cancellations and airspace closures forcing tens of thousands to seek an urgent exit. Reports suggest that more than 43,000 Americans have managed to leave the Middle East since the commencement of Operation Epic Fury in February.
Mace’s efforts culminated in a successful evacuation mission. She coordinated with the State Department to secure a flight for stranded Americans while Grey Bull Rescue organized the logistics. This culminated in a flight that safely transported 155 individuals, including 11 infants, from Israel to Greece. Reflecting on the experience, Mace expressed gratitude, stating, “Tonight I am grateful. And I will never forget what I saw. What I learned. And the Americans who volunteered and who are serving our nation patriotically tonight.”
Grey Bull Rescue, operational since 2023, has been pivotal in rescuing Americans from both the Israeli conflict and various other crises, such as cartel violence in Mexico and aiding international figures like Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. Bryan Stern, founder and chairman of Grey Bull Rescue, commended Mace for her proactive involvement: “Congresswoman Mace was fully embedded with our team, not to watch, but to work to save lives.” He highlighted the group’s commitment to being non-political while remaining proud of American officials who support their constituents in times of need.
The evacuation efforts by Mace and Grey Bull Rescue also reflect broader criticisms directed at the State Department. Some Americans initially stranded raised concerns over the clarity and sufficiency of evacuation guidance. As the conflict escalates and security threats rise, the importance of effective government communication has become increasingly evident.
Rep. Nancy Mace’s hands-on approach in the Middle East illustrates the urgent need for swift and effective action in times of crisis, both from elected officials and agencies charged with protecting citizens abroad. With Grey Bull Rescue’s assistance, Mace has been a vital force in ensuring many Americans returned home safely amidst chaos, making this an important chapter in the ongoing narrative of crisis response and governmental responsibility.
