Days after reports surfaced about the California Highway Patrol (CHP) providing security for Kamala Harris during her book tour, the former Vice President canceled three events scheduled in California. Originally slated for Sacramento, Anaheim, and San Diego, these events were marked as canceled on Ticketmaster, which cited a “scheduling conflict” as the reason. Those who had purchased tickets will receive refunds. Harris last appeared at an event in Oakland on March 3 and still has upcoming appearances planned in states like North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Concerns have emerged regarding taxpayer funds supporting Harris’s security detail, with the CHP reportedly accompanying her throughout the book tour, even during out-of-state and international engagements. State officials have refrained from disclosing the security costs or the number of officers involved in her detail, leaving many questions unanswered.

Harris had security protection assigned following her departure from office, but this protection was rescinded by Donald Trump in September. Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton has criticized the arrangement, dubbing it a “corrupt freebie.” He argued that, rather than taxpayers, Harris’s donors should bear the costs of her security, stating, “Californians who already pay the highest taxes in the country for the worst results.” His criticism highlights broader frustrations with the perceived misallocation of taxpayer resources, encapsulated in his declaration, “We are sick of it.”

GOP Assemblyman Tom Lackey, who has a longstanding affiliation with the CHP, provided a perspective that acknowledges the necessity of security given the heightened political tensions of today. He expressed that Harris deserves protection but emphasized the need for transparency regarding expenditure. “It’s a significant amount of money,” Lackey noted, underscoring the importance of discussing whether such security details should come at taxpayer expense.

The controversy surrounding Harris’s book tour raises critical questions about the intersection of politics and public funding. While some deem security for high-profile political figures essential in light of rising hostility, the legitimacy of taxpayers footing the bill remains a hotly debated topic. Hilton’s and Lackey’s positions reflect a growing impatience with what many view as misuse of state funds in the name of political ambition. As Harris’s tour continues, the scrutiny over her security measures and the associated costs remains a pivotal issue.
