Legendary college football coach Lou Holtz passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89. His death marks the end of a remarkable life devoted to the sport and his players. Holtz made his mark during a successful tenure at the University of Notre Dame, coaching the Fighting Irish from 1986 to 1996. He racked up an impressive 100 wins and secured a national championship in 1988.

Holtz’s influence went beyond the football field. Born on January 6, 1937, in Follansbee, West Virginia, he rose from modest beginnings to become one of college athletics’ most respected figures. Over a career that spanned five decades, he transformed programs at William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, and South Carolina.

His family’s statement noted, “Louis Leo ‘Lou’ Holtz… has passed away at the age of 89 in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by family.” This tribute highlights the love and support that surrounded him at the end of his life. Holtz’s faith was a guiding principle, reflected in the life he shared with his wife, Beth, whom he was married to for over 50 years.

Holtz is remembered for promoting enduring values such as faith, family, and service. His impact resonated through the Holtz Charitable Foundation and the thousands of players and communities he influenced throughout his career. He is survived by four children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Wesley Pritchett, who played for Holtz during the 1988 National Championship team, reminisced about a “beautiful conversation” he had with the coach. He recalled Holtz’s “Three Rules for Life”:

  1. Do what’s right – trust.
  2. Do everything to the best of your ability – commitment.
  3. Show people you care – love.

Pritchett shared that these principles reflect the simple yet profound wisdom Holtz imparted to his players. He also expressed concerns about the modern landscape of college football, lamenting the impact of the transfer portal on young athletes. According to Pritchett, this trend deprives them of valuable life lessons and the lasting bonds formed during their college years.

Holtz’s legacy is not solely defined by his coaching accomplishments but also by his engagement with politics, particularly his support for Donald Trump. In the 2016 Presidential Election, Holtz endorsed Trump during the Republican primary and praised his business acumen and candid approach. He continued to voice his support in 2020, becoming one of Trump’s most notable backers. At the Republican National Convention that year, Holtz referred to Trump as a “consistent winner” and urged voters to rally behind him. His endorsement came with criticisms aimed at opponents, reinforcing his commitment to a vision for America.

In a touching moment, Trump awarded Holtz the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Holtz expressed gratitude, stating Trump was “the greatest President during my lifetime.” Just a few years later, in September 2024, Holtz reiterated his support for Trump, emphasizing the urgent need for his leadership in securing America’s borders and fostering national greatness.

Holtz’s passing is felt deeply across the sports world and among his supporters. His unique blend of motivational spirit and commitment to values made him an iconic figure, not only in football but also as a voice for principle and leadership. As preparations for his funeral take shape, including a Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Notre Dame, many will remember Lou Holtz for his unwavering dedication to his players, his faith, and his indelible impact on American sports and beyond.
