A mosque in Northern Virginia is raising eyebrows by commemorating the Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in recent strikes ordered by the U.S. and Israel. The Manassas Mosque held a remembrance service on Sunday, coinciding with Ramadan. During this service, attendees offered “condolences and glad tidings on the martyrdom” of Khamenei, described in an Instagram post as “Our Leader.” This connection to Khamenei, a figure with significant bloodshed linked to his rule, has prompted a strong backlash.

Images shared online show Khamenei prominently praised in a mosque that is about 30 miles from the nation’s capital. Critics point out that, as Americans, Khamenei does not represent their interests or values. Instead, many see Khamenei as an enemy, someone responsible for the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans. A statement from the Israel War Room noted this reality, calling Khamenei a figure of disdain rather than reverence.

The founder of the mosque, Abolfazl Bahram Nahidian, has historical ties to the Iranian regime dating back to the 1970s. He is alleged to have received substantial funding to advance Iranian propaganda efforts in the United States. A troubling aspect to consider is how a figure with such deep connections can maintain a prominent voice within a community in America.

The mosque characterizes itself as a “community of pious, educated, socially conscious, and active Muslims.” However, its connection to Tehran raises serious questions about its loyalty and activities. House Republicans have voiced concerns about the mosque’s ties to the Iranian regime, linking it with several Islamic institutions suspected of harboring pro-Iran sentiments. Videos revealing displays of IRGC martyrs and an idolization of figures like Khomeini do not help their case.

Tax filings add yet another layer to the scrutiny. The Manassas Mosque reportedly received financial assistance from the Alavi Foundation, an organization with links to the Iranian state that is under investigation for alleged financial misconduct related to terrorism support. Despite these concerns, as a registered house of worship, the mosque isn’t compelled to disclose its financial dealings, making oversight challenging.

In the wake of recent conflicts, such as the October 2023 terrorist attack by Hamas, mosque leadership also made headlines by expressing support for what they termed the “Palestinian Resistance.” A now-removed blog post that praised Qasem Soleimani, a general linked to many American casualties, illustrates a troubling trend of turning recognized figures of violence into heroes. This tendency raises alarms among national security experts and community members alike.

The situation at the Manassas Mosque highlights the complex nature of faith, loyalty, and political ideology in contemporary America. As individuals gather to honor Khamenei, stark divisions emerge in how communities perceive leadership and legacy. The ongoing debate represents more than a local memory service; it showcases the ongoing struggle to articulate and defend American values in the face of ideological opposition.
