Nearly two and a half years after a near-physical confrontation during a Senate hearing, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien has offered a surprising endorsement of Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla. This came after President Donald Trump nominated Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security. O’Brien stated, “If anyone is willing to stand their butt up to protect America, it’s Markwayne Mullin.” This approval highlights a significant shift in the dynamics between the two men.

Their relationship was marked by an intense public clash back in November 2023. During a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing, tensions escalated when Mullin, a former mixed martial arts fighter, reacted to O’Brien’s earlier challenge. O’Brien had claimed on social media that he could take the senator “any time” or “any place.” In response, Mullin defiantly remarked, “Sir, this is a time, this is a place. You want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults, and we can finish it here,” before standing up and seeming ready to confront O’Brien directly. The situation required intervention from then-Committee Chairman Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who called for civility and order, telling Mullin to “sit down.” This confrontation was emblematic of their fraught exchanges, with Mullin branding O’Brien a “thug” and O’Brien countering by calling Mullin “disrespectful.”

The November incident was not isolated. Earlier that year, the two had another heated discussion, this time over O’Brien’s salary compared to that of rank-and-file union members, prompting Sanders to step in once more. The sharp words and heated atmosphere served to further underline the tension between union leadership and congressional representation.

O’Brien’s recent statement, however, marks a noteworthy departure from their combative past. The endorsement indicates a reconciliation, especially considering that tensions appear to have eased after Trump intervened in early 2024. Mullin later shared on “Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla” that Trump had communicated with O’Brien as Teamsters’ members began to show growing support for the Republican side. Mullin recounted that O’Brien acknowledged the political shift among his members, saying, “my brothers” were backing Trump.

The nomination of Mullin to lead DHS signals a larger strategic move by Trump following the tumultuous tenure of the outgoing Secretary Kristi Noem, who is being reassigned as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, focusing on security in the Western Hemisphere. The interplay between these political figures reflects not only personal relationships but also the evolving landscape of party loyalties within labor unions.

This dramatic arc—from confrontation to endorsement—illustrates a broader narrative of political alignment and influence within American unions. O’Brien’s commendation of Mullin could signal a growing recognition within the Teamsters of where their members stand, pointing to a possible shift in union dynamics as political allegiances continue to evolve.
