By 2024, this idea ballooned into a federal expenditure of $30 billion, as the government sought to emulate Maine’s strategy nationwide. On the surface, this seemed a logical step in adapting education to a digital age, preparing students for a tech-oriented workforce. Yet this promise of progress doesn’t align with reality.
Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath presented troubling evidence to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. He pointed out that Generation Z is the first demographic to experience a decline in test scores—the kinds of results that signify a failure of this educational strategy. Not only are students underperforming, but Horvath also found a clear negative correlation between time spent with digital devices and academic success. “This is not a debate about rejecting technology,” he stressed, emphasizing that the conversation should focus on how these tools fit within human learning processes. He argued, “Evidence indicates that indiscriminate digital expansion has weakened learning environments rather than strengthened them.”
Supporting this claim, studies cited by Techspot revealed that 3,000 university students devoted two-thirds of their laptop time to activities unrelated to their coursework. Furthermore, findings published in Fortune indicated that no significant improvement in test scores had emerged since the implementation of King’s program in 2017, raising a critical alarm about the effectiveness of this tech-driven trend.
Worse yet, research published in OxJournal identified a troubling link between increased technology use and the rising prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) across all age groups. As the study noted, “The earlier we immerse our children’s underdeveloped minds in digital media, offering them instant fulfillment, the higher the likelihood that an attention-deficit disorder will emerge as they mature.” This highlights a profound danger: young minds struggle to concentrate on tasks when constantly bombarded with digital distractions. It leads to a diminished ability to focus and retain information.
