Residents of Los Angeles are feeling let down after the presale lottery for tickets to the 2028 Olympic Games shattered expectations. Initially, there was optimism about affordable access to this major sporting event right in their own city. Lorraine Ali, writing for the Los Angeles Times, explored how expectations diverged drastically from reality.

The LA28 committee touted the Olympics as a golden opportunity for locals. Mayor Karen Bass promoted a vision of inclusivity, stating, ‘“Creating the Games together!”’ They assured residents that tickets would start at a modest $28, including fees. However, the presale lottery, which took place from April 2-5, 2026, quickly revealed a different story. Ali emphasized how misleading the promises were, writing that many believed they would have a fair opportunity to attend the Games.

Reality struck hard on the first day as residents logged on, hopeful for reasonably priced tickets. Popular events like artistic gymnastics were simply marked “unavailable.” For swimming events, the base price soared to $1,116.27, while the closing ceremony hit an astonishing $4,961.20 per seat. In Ali’s words, ‘“By Monday, there were only a handful of events accessible for less than $150 a ticket.”’ Even the preliminary events offered limited options, pushing the costs for finals and medal events significantly higher.

Frustration boiled over as locals realized the only way to attend without paying was to volunteer, working at the Games for free. The situation worsened with high service fees attached to the tickets. One resident, Lori Rovner, revealed that after purchasing 16 tickets priced at $2,100, her bill inflated to $2,604.63—an increase of over $500 purely from service fees. Rovner exclaimed, ‘“It’s insane. I don’t understand what the service is.”’

This outcry wasn’t limited to Rovner. Many took to social media, sharing their grievances about the ticket prices and drawing stark comparisons between the approach of the Paris 2024 Olympics and that of LA28. One user pointed out the irony of the promised $28 tickets, stating that families looking to attend would now face prices of $500 and up.

LA28’s handling of this presale ticketing raises serious questions about who truly benefits from such grand events. The initial assurances of affordability for local residents have seemingly dissolved under a tide of expensive offerings and hidden fees. The same residents who were promised a fair shake are now left feeling disillusioned as the reality of accessibility to the Olympics becomes increasingly out of reach.
