A Minnesota school is making changes to better serve its Muslim students. Park Center Senior High School plans to establish a prayer room and include foot-washing stations at Osseo Senior High School. These features come as part of a larger development effort under the “Building a Better Future” program, which has a budget of approximately $375 million, backed by voter approval in recent elections.
According to a spokesperson from Park Center, the upcoming prayer space should be viewed as a “multipurpose space.” This means it can serve various functions beyond prayer, including quiet study, testing, or club meetings. “The space could be used for prayer or other student or staff multipurpose needs throughout the day,” Kay Villella, executive director of school/community relations, explained. This approach aims to ensure that facilities are available for a range of activities, making the environment more inclusive for all students.
Muslim students face unique needs, especially regarding daily prayers. The Islamic practice involves praying five times a day at specific times, which often requires a calm, dedicated area during school hours. Preparing for these prayers includes a ritual washing called wudu, which entails washing the feet. The addition of foot-washing stations acknowledges this important practice, as officials indicate they were included after consulting with students.
The planned renovations will unfold over the next three summers, encompassing not only the new prayer facilities but also upgrades such as a new media center, cafeteria redesign, and enhancements to technical education spaces. Minnesota boasts a sizable Muslim population, estimated between 140,000 and 200,000, which constitutes around 2 to 3% of the state’s populace. This community has a significant presence in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, with many identifying as Somali.
