A chaotic scene unfolded at the Ontario Mills Mall on Friday when a 28-year-old man allegedly set multiple fires inside the bustling shopping center. This incident led to a full evacuation and temporary closure, disrupting the usual flow of shoppers. Witnesses captured the alarming events on video, highlighting the intensity of the situation.

The suspect, identified as Luis Javier Gallegos Jr. from Rancho Cucamonga, was seen with a lighter and a backpack, igniting blazes in various stores, including the True Religion outlet and Nordstrom Rack. Police received reports around 10:30 a.m. and quickly arrived at the scene. Officers spotted Gallegos inside the True Religion store, where he was setting fire amid the merchandise. Video footage circulating on social media shows flames engulfing the store while officers confronted him, attempting to take him into custody. Gallegos reportedly failed to comply with the commands of law enforcement.

During the chaos, one officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and required treatment at a local medical facility. Gallegos also sustained injuries and was transported for evaluation and treatment before being booked into the West Valley Detention Center on a felony charge related to arson.

As a precaution, explosive detection K-9 teams thoroughly swept the mall, though authorities found no additional threats. Fire crews successfully extinguished the blazes without reporting any injuries among shoppers or mall employees. While the mall remained closed for the remainder of the day, the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have yet to disclose a motive for Gallegos’s actions.

This dramatic event follows closely on the heels of another large warehouse fire in Ontario, which also resulted in arson charges against a different suspect. However, police have not established a connection between these two cases at this time. The disturbance at Ontario Mills raises concerns not just for shopper safety but also for ongoing issues regarding criminal behavior in public spaces.

As the investigation unfolds, it remains critical to consider the broader implications of incidents like this one, especially in busy areas that serve as gathering spots for communities.
