A conservative nonprofit, Restoration of America (ROA), is launching a significant $5 million campaign to push for the passage of voter ID legislation. This effort coincides with a broader Republican strategy to advance parts of the SAVE America Act through Congress in the coming months.

The campaign kicks off with a substantial $3.1 million investment in national television ads, complemented by a targeted digital strategy focusing on key swing states. ROA claims that polling shows 83% of Americans support requiring a photo ID to vote, emphasizing that the issue has substantial backing from the public. “The fact that this is overwhelmingly supported by everyday Americans is hard to ignore,” stated a spokesperson from the group.

With Senate Republicans indicating their readiness to bypass Democrats, the timing of this campaign is pivotal. Senator Lindsey Graham plans to weave elements of the SAVE America Act into a larger legislative package, referring to it as a “down payment” on future reforms. Furthermore, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso has suggested that Republicans are prepared to “go it alone” using the reconciliation process to push through their priorities, echoing the urgency set forth by former President Donald Trump, who hopes to see legislation on his desk by June 1.

The centerpiece of this ad campaign is a 30-second spot entitled “Save America.” This advertisement is designed to air during prominent news shows, regardless of their political bent, as it attempts to reach a broad audience. The ad argues, “As Americans, we’re fair and logical,” and reiterates that “83% of us favor requiring a photo ID to vote.” This framing positions voter ID requirements as a common-sense approach endorsed by a large majority of citizens.

Moreover, the ad asserts that “most of the civilized world requires it, but not us,” making a case for the necessity of trust in the electoral process. Critical of both political parties, it questions why Democrats oppose voter ID laws and why Republicans have not acted decisively. The ad concludes with a striking call to action, urging viewers to contact their senators about passing the SAVE America Act.

Doug Truax, founder and CEO of Restoration of America, highlighted the campaign’s aim. “There’s nothing more important right now than restoring confidence in our elections,” he said, stressing the need for a trustworthy electoral system. The organization aims to unify various conservative entities focused on policy and voting issues, including the Voter Reference Foundation.

The ads will be released on Monday, coinciding with the senators’ congressional recess, a strategic decision that aims to reach lawmakers when they return to their home states. This direct approach intends to elevate the pressure on Senate members to act on voter ID legislation.

As this campaign gains traction, it adds to the ongoing national conversation around election integrity and trustworthiness. By targeting the political dynamics in Washington, the group seeks to galvanize public support and prompt decisive action from legislators.
