Former News 12 Long Island reporter Amy McGorry has navigated a challenging path marked by health struggles. After years of grappling with two rare autoimmune liver diseases, she has received life-changing news: a living liver donor has come forward to help her. This generous act was prompted by her heartfelt appeal and the extensive coverage that followed.

At just 56, McGorry’s battles began in her college years with diagnoses of autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). These slow-acting diseases gradually wreaked havoc on her liver. Recent health crises culminated in a hospitalization six months ago, revealing the severity of her condition. By February, doctors delivered a stark message: she required a transplant due to critical internal bleeding. Given the prolonged wait for a deceased donor, the most viable solution was to find a living donor with O-positive blood.

In March, McGorry took an emotional step, making a public plea for help through social media. This sincere request resonated widely, resulting in increased attention from various media outlets. As fate would have it, a loyal viewer of the station, who had been following McGorry’s journey, responded to her call. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, underwent testing and was confirmed as a match.

McGorry received the life-altering news while teaching a health science class at Long Island University. Surrounded by her students who had been tracking her progress, the room erupted in applause. “I learned the news while teaching my health science class at LIU – last day of class and told kids who have been through this with me and they all clapped,” McGorry shared with the New York Post. Her excitement overflows as she looks forward to turning a corner in her life—a life that had been overshadowed by health concerns.

The scheduled transplant at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City represents not just a hope for recovery but also a return to normalcy. McGorry has played an advocacy role, traveling to Washington, D.C. in April to support the Living Donor Protection Act. This proposed legislation seeks to provide job-protected leave and other essential safeguards for living organ donors, highlighting her commitment to helping others facing similar challenges.

McGorry’s story is one of resilience and community support. Her journey underscores the importance of connection and the impact that a single act of kindness can make. As she prepares for this next chapter, her courage continues to inspire those around her.
