Claire Valdez is making waves in her bid for the Democratic primary in New York’s 7th congressional district. Her campaign focuses heavily on trans rights, which she champions as a cornerstone of her platform. Valdez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and supported by Marxist NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, aims to integrate these rights into broader social programs.
In a recent interview, Valdez highlighted the urgency of this issue. She expressed, “When we talk about trans rights and bodily autonomy and we talk about universal programs like social housing, like Medicare for all, like all of these programs, you know,” referring to the precarious situation faced by trans individuals, particularly youth. She stressed that “trans people, and trans youth especially, are often the highest at risk for homelessness and retaliation at their jobs.” This assertion sets the tone for her approach to legislation aimed at supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
Valdez is pushing for a Trans Bill of Rights. She insists it is essential to capture the rights of trans individuals within universal programs. According to her, “We need to make sure that we’re enshrining their rights in a Trans Bill of Rights and in workplaces.” Such statements underline her determination to combine progressive social policies with advocacy for trans rights. She argues that everyone deserves stable housing but emphasizes the unique vulnerabilities of trans individuals in this context.
As a sitting New York State Assemblymember, Valdez co-sponsored A8841, a bill aimed at establishing a gender-affirming care access program. This legislation seeks to enhance accessibility to medical interventions for transgender individuals, backed by taxpayer support. Valdez believes that “Medicare for All includes gender-affirming care and health care for trans folks,” reflecting her stance that healthcare should be inclusive for all identities.
However, the framing of Valdez’s arguments raises questions regarding the accuracy of her claims. According to the 2024 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the largest shares of the homeless population comprise Black Americans, Native Americans, and other racial and ethnic groups. Valdez’s assertion that transgender people face the highest risk of homelessness is challenged by this data, which shows that they are a small percentage of the total homeless population. In fact, the transgender population facing homelessness is listed at less than 1% in various counts. On a single night in January 2024, approximately 2,500 to 2,600 transgender individuals were counted among those experiencing homelessness, significantly overshadowed by numbers from other demographics.
Moreover, the same HUD report documents that on that same night, over 32,000 veterans experienced homelessness, highlighting a stark contrast in the demographics of those in need of housing support. This data suggests that while Valdez’s focus is on creating inclusive policies for trans individuals, the stark realities faced by various groups, including veterans, warrant equal attention.
Valdez’s push for a comprehensive Trans Bill of Rights and extensive healthcare access indicates a broader narrative within her campaign. Her alignment with socialist principles reflects a push for systemic change. However, her reliance on select demographic data raises the need for careful consideration and nuanced approaches in addressing complex social issues. As the primary race continues, the implications of her policies will be scrutinized, revealing the challenges of balancing ambitious social agendas with the reality of diverse population needs.
