Residents across Massachusetts and Rhode Island were startled Saturday afternoon by a loud, mysterious boom that prompted a surge in 911 calls. The unsettling noise, which many believed might result from a falling tree or exploding transformer, struck just after 2 p.m. Reports flooded in as people sought answers to the source of the disconcerting sound.

One resident from Melrose described the experience vividly, stating, “The whole house, actually all houses in the neighborhood shook. Much louder than a transformer exploding and definitely not an earthquake.” From Wellesley, another resident echoed the sentiment, saying they heard “what sounded like an explosion about 10 minutes ago.” The event seemed to transcend locations, affecting various communities in the area.

Amateur recordings began to surface, with one notable clip captured on a dashcam by a Cambridge resident. The video displayed what appeared to be a double bang, with the observer commenting, “Not a scientist, but it sounds like a sonic boom to me.” They noted how “leaves on the tree don’t move at all,” suggesting an anomaly that warranted further investigation.

In response to the concerns raised by residents, meteorologist Nick Stewart proposed a scientific explanation for the mysterious boom. He indicated it was likely caused by a meteor entering the atmosphere, or a bolide. “Reports of an explosion heard around Boston I believe are going to be a rather significant bolide/meteor entering the atmosphere,” Stewart explained. He detailed that a “very large ‘flash’ detected by GOES-19 GLM does not correlate with active thunderstorms,” reinforcing his theory that the unsettling sound was a natural phenomenon.

Stewart’s analysis pointed to a “flash density product,” which sheds light on the occurrence of meteoroids upon reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. He articulated that this distinctive flash, registered east of Boston, aligns with the reported loud boom and bolstered confidence that the explosion was indeed of celestial origin.

This event captivated the attention of many who experienced it firsthand, stirring curiosity and concern about natural occurrences and how they can manifest suddenly in populated areas. As the dust settles from the initial chaos, the scientific community will likely continue to assess the implications of such meteoric events, raising awareness about the phenomena occurring in our skies.
