City Councilor Paul Wymer’s election as the new mayor of Rio Rancho is noteworthy. For the first time in over ten years, the city sees a change in leadership. Wymer, a Republican, decisively defeated his opponent, Alexandria Pilan, by 23 points, a significant margin in a local race. This shift reflects a larger trend in the political landscape of Rio Rancho, where previous Republican support was slim—President Donald Trump won the city by just three points in the 2024 election.

Wymer expressed gratitude to the voters, stating, “I’m very humbled that the voters of Rio Rancho got out in what appears to be such strong support for me.” His excitement about stepping into the mayor’s position is clear, and he emphasizes his experience as a key factor moving forward. Capturing 63% of the vote to Pilan’s 37%, he emerged victorious as results came in from the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office.

Notably, voter engagement played a significant role in this election. By the time results began rolling in, it was reported that about 20% of eligible voters had already cast their ballots—numbers that exceeded turnout from the municipal election held in March. In that earlier race, Wymer had 45% of the vote amidst a six-candidate field, while Pilan received only 27%. A runoff was necessary then, and uncertainty about turnout hung over his campaign. However, robust early voting helped quell that anxiety, with Wymer noting strong participation levels.

State Republican Chair Amy Barela celebrated Wymer’s victory, acknowledging that Republican enthusiasm is rising in New Mexico. “Republicans across New Mexico are fired up, and this is a great step toward our goal of flipping New Mexico red in November,” she stated, hinting at broader electoral aspirations for the party in the state.

Wymer, who has served on the City Council, will be tasked not just with leading but also with appointing his successor for the council seat he vacates. This appointment must be confirmed by the City Council, and the individual chosen will need to campaign during the next municipal election.

Looking ahead, Wymer intends to prioritize reevaluating the city’s budget process. He anticipates a steep learning curve in his new role, humorously likening it to ‘drinking from a fire hose.’ His proactive approach signals that Wymer is ready to tackle the responsibilities of the mayor’s office while ensuring the city continues to thrive amidst its growth, particularly with significant employers like Intel headquartered in the area.

As the fastest-growing city in New Mexico, Rio Rancho now stands at a population of around 112,524. Wymer’s election could very well influence the future political outcomes for the region. His significant win provides momentum for Republican candidates statewide, and as the city evolves, his leadership will be closely observed.
