Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) is leading a critical investigation into birth tourism agencies that facilitate foreign nationals delivering their children in the United States with the expectation of securing birthright citizenship. This oversight comes at a time when concerns about immigration and citizenship are at the forefront of national discussions.

Gill chairs the Task Force on Defending Constitutional Rights and Exposing Institutional Abuses, which has recently sent requests for information to several agencies involved in this practice. These agencies include Have My Baby in Miami, Maternity Services of El Paso, International Maternity Services, and Doctores Para Ti, all of which assist foreign clients in navigating the process of giving birth in the U.S. under dubious circumstances.

In his efforts, Gill emphasizes a crucial point: while giving birth in the U.S. is not illegal, misrepresenting one’s intentions when entering the country on a temporary visa constitutes a violation of current law. He stated, “The birth tourism industry relies on exploiting birthright citizenship as currently interpreted under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.” This highlights the tension between legal avenues and potential abuses of the immigration system.

In a viral video, Gill explained, “That’s a problem. The American people are sick of it, and my task force on the House Oversight Committee is going after these companies.” His statements reflect a growing unease among citizens regarding how these practices may undermine the integrity of American citizenship.

Data indicates that approximately 33,000 children born in the U.S. are granted birthright citizenship annually because their parents entered the country on temporary visas, often with the intention of giving birth. This circumvention raises questions about the long-term implications of such practices, as these children later may be able to sponsor their non-citizen parents for permanent residency.

The issue is not isolated to any single group but has gained traction among various nationalities. Reports show that birth tourism is prevalent among Turkish nationals in New York, Chinese nationals in California, Russian nationals in Florida, and Middle Eastern individuals in Illinois. This trend underscores the broader implications of how immigration policies are navigated within different communities.

Past investigations have revealed alarming patterns. The Justice Department uncovered a significant birth tourism scheme in New York City in December 2020, wherein 100 U.S.-born children were granted citizenship under similar circumstances. In California, a prior scheme involved 8,500 U.S.-born children, where parents used tourist visas to ensure their children would gain citizenship by being born on American soil.

The establishment of over 100 Chinese-owned birth tourism agencies in California, as detailed in Peter Schweizer’s book, “The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon,” further illustrates the commercialization of an immigration loophole that many believe should be addressed.

Rep. Gill’s focused investigation points to a growing recognition that citizenship shouldn’t be a product exploited for financial gain or strategic advantage. As the situation develops, the public awaits the findings of his committee, which hold potential implications for how birthright citizenship is understood and legislated in the future.
