Since its inception, “Saturday Night Live” has been labeled a platform for liberal comedy, but recent revelations cast a stark light on just how pronounced this bias has become. The show’s early seasons featured skits that lampooned political figures, like Chevy Chase’s portrayal of President Gerald Ford. Today’s programming has taken that a step further into the realm of absurdity.

A new analysis from NewsBusters, a conservative media research group, indicates that political humor on the show overwhelmingly targets conservatives. This study, shared by the New York Post, provides numbers that paint a clear picture of the show’s direction. According to the research, a staggering 91% of jokes during the popular ‘Weekend Update’ segment poked fun at conservative figures. The hosts, Michael Che and Colin Jost, handled 226 political jokes in just the first 19 episodes of the season. Out of those, a mere 18 jokes targeted Democrats, while an additional three were labeled as nonpartisan.

It’s not just a few isolated jokes. The analysis shows that Donald Trump was the favorite target, with 101 jokes aimed squarely at him. Such a disproportionate focus raises questions about the show’s commitment to balanced comedy. One particularly controversial joke included a reference to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, which Che delivered with a gleam in his eye. “President Trump attended the opening night of ‘Chicago’ at the Kennedy Center, and I think that’s cool that the president is going to the theater. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?” he quipped, prompting laughter from the audience. The use of such dark humor exemplifies the uncomfortable contours of political satire today, where jokes seem more like political statements.

The analysis points out that Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was the second most targeted figure with 14 jokes, followed closely by figures like former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and pundit Tucker Carlson, who were each subjects of multiple jabs. George Santos also made the list, reflecting an eagerness from the show to target those on the right.

SNL’s transformation has not gone unnoticed. Critics assert that it has evolved from a comedic institution into a vehicle for liberal propaganda. It’s no longer merely about humor; it’s about shaping political perceptions. As one observer succinctly put it, “Saturday Night Live is no longer a comedy show. It’s a super PAC for the Democrat Party.” This stark shift means that entertainment once designed to appeal to a broad audience has instead been reframed to serve a specific political agenda.

The fallout from such a slanted approach impacts the show’s entertainment value as well. Where once it was a shared cultural experience, its current state breeds division rather than unity. Late-night programs, including SNL, have veered away from enjoyable, inclusive humor, opting instead for a soapbox to amplify far-left sentiments.

As humor in American media pivots under the weight of political bias, audiences may find themselves questioning what remains of fair comedic practice. The line between entertainment and activism seems to have blurred, leaving behind a platform that has lost its foundational purpose—to entertain.
