Former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent is shaking up the South Carolina U.S. Senate race with a bold endorsement. He’s backing candidate Mark Lynch in his challenge against incumbent Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. Kent, who has publicly criticized Graham as a “war hawk, neocon,” is urging voters to take action. According to Kent, South Carolinians tired of sending “billions of dollars overseas” should consider voting for Lynch as a way to “do all of us a great service and vote to get Lindsey Graham out of office this Tuesday, June 9th.”

In his video message, Kent championed Lynch as “the America First candidate,” emphasizing that Lynch is uniquely positioned to unseat Graham. This contest not only highlights differing viewpoints within the party but also signals a faction of the Republican base that is increasingly discontent with interventionist policies.

Graham’s campaign is pushing back against Lynch’s bid. Press secretary Abby Zilch pointed out that Lynch’s endorsement comes from someone who has garnered serious criticism from Donald Trump, who previously labeled Kent a “SLEAZEBAG,” “LEAKER,” and “LOSER.” Zilch characterized Lynch’s support as indicative of his alignment with more extreme elements within the party, noting that Lynch advocates for “more Massies” in Congress—a reference to Rep. Thomas Massie’s approach to governance.

Trump himself has endorsed Graham, prompting a pointed condemnation of Lynch. In a Truth Social post, he described Graham as doing “a fantastic job” and warned voters against Lynch, calling him a “LUNATIC” who aligns with figures Trump believes would undermine the party. This rhetoric showcases the internal divisions and the high stakes involved in the contest.

Lynch has not shied away from aligning himself with vocal conservatives such as Massie, Matt Gaetz, and Marjorie Taylor Greene. His campaign offers a stark contrast to Graham’s long-established political presence in the Senate, where Graham has embraced a more traditional Republican platform since 2003.

Moreover, Kent’s resignation from his post earlier this year underscores his dedication to this cause. He stepped down over his opposition to the ongoing war in Iran, which he argues lacks justification. Kent’s comments set the stage for a wider discussion about America’s role on the global stage and the questioning of long-held foreign policy stances within the Republican Party.

The upcoming vote is not just about a seat in the Senate; it reflects a broader debate about America’s future and its engagement with the world. With both candidates raising significant issues, South Carolinians will ultimately decide which vision they prefer for the party and the nation at large.
