Islamic State-linked terrorists have unleashed relentless violence against Christians in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), killing over 1,100 believers since late 2024. The reports are staggering and distressing. In a single week ending June 2, 2026, these extremists claimed the lives of 57 Christians in the Beni region of North Kivu.

The Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP) is at the forefront of these attacks. They are responsible for horrific acts, including the slaughter of 16 individuals in the village of Mayangose. Just a day prior, another 10 were captured and executed. The brutality highlighted in these incidents reveals a pattern of targeted assaults, particularly against vulnerable groups like the Pygmy Twa ethnic community. Just as in Nigeria, the horrors faced by these Christians stem from radical Islamic extremists, not from local or historical adversaries.

In 2026 alone, the pace of killings is chilling. On January 2, ADF rebels rampaged through villages, killing at least 16 people in their wake. A month later, the death toll spiked dramatically, reaching 28 on February 2, with multiple villages hit on a single day. The violence didn’t stop there; in April, a massacre in Bafwakoa left up to 60 Christians dead. Survivors told harrowing accounts of residents being burned alive or brutally beheaded.

The scale of these atrocities calls for attention. In total, ISCAP has been linked to over 6,500 deaths since it declared allegiance to the Islamic State in 2017. Reports from independent organizations like the Bridgeway Foundation detail a staggering 967 civilian killings by ISCAP in 2025 alone, emphasizing the need for an accurate narrative of these events as many figures reported by terror groups can be exaggerated.

The fighters often deliver a grim ultimatum—convert to Islam, submit to dhimmi status, or face death. Dhimmi status historically provided some protections to Christians and Jews under Islamic rule, but ISCAP misuses it as a tool for control, demanding a poll tax and submission to Islamic authority. Those who resist are labeled as “Christian combatants,” a term meant to justify their killings as legitimate military action.

The violence against Christians in the DRC unfolds against a backdrop of demographic realities. Over 95% of the country’s population is Christian, yet persecution persists. The Open Doors World Watch List revealed that in 2025, the DRC ranked 35th globally for persecution against Christians. This landscape of violence is compounded by the rise of other militant groups, such as the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel movement, which also wreak havoc in the region.

As the international community looks on, human rights organizations emphasize the severe and systematic attacks against civilians. Agnès Callamard of Amnesty International recently described these abuses as war crimes that demand immediate global attention.

In conclusion, the situation for Christians in eastern Congo is dire. The ongoing violence not only threatens lives but disrupts communities and displaces millions. As these attacks continue, the call for awareness and justice intensifies, highlighting the urgent need for a collective response to this severe humanitarian crisis.
