A ransom note has emerged regarding Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie. The note, sent to TMZ, claims that she is alive but frightened. TMZ founder Harvey Levin shared details on this unsettling development during an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity.

Levin characterized the note as containing information suggesting the kidnappers are familiar with the Tucson, Arizona area. He stated, “I will say the letter begins — and again, we’re not sure that this is really written by the person who has Nancy — but I will say the letter begins by saying she is safe but scared.” This critical assertion is alarming, as it hints at both the well-being and fear of Guthrie.

The note adds that Nancy understands what the demands are. “They are, you know, through us, telling the family — and obviously the Sheriff’s Department gave the family the letter we received — exactly what they’re demanding, and they’re saying that Nancy is aware of it,” Levin explained. The kidnappers appear to be sending a clear message, outlining their demands without the intent to negotiate further. Levin conveyed that the sender has stated, “this will be their only communication and they are done communicating, negotiating, here’s the deal and that’s it.” This ultimatum creates a tense environment as time runs out.

With the authorities involved, there is a growing sense of urgency. Levin noted that the inability to trace the email has left law enforcement in a difficult position. “And, you know, as the clock ticks, I think that’s one of the reasons the FBI and other authorities have, you know, gotten desperate here because as far as we can tell, it’s impossible to trace the origin of this email,” he mentioned. The pressure mounts as officials have limited communication options, and this situation continues to develop.

Levin pointed to specific elements in the letter that could indicate the culprit’s location. He stated, “There’s something very specific in there, and I’m sure the FBI keyed in on this a while ago, and it makes me think that whoever did this, whoever wrote this letter is in that Tucson area.” The clues embedded in the ransom note could be pivotal in locating the individual responsible, as familiarity with Tucson suggests a local connection. Levin speculated, “They could be in New Mexico now, but they are definitely familiar with Tucson.” This insight opens the door for intense investigative work in the region.

As for the ransom itself, it has been reported that the captors are demanding $6 million in bitcoin for Nancy’s release. Despite the grim details of the situation, the Guthrie family has agreed to pay the ransom, demonstrating their desperate attempt to secure her safety. However, there remains an unsettling aspect; no proof of life has yet been presented. This absence heightens the stakes and adds to the overall tension surrounding the case.

As the situation unfolds, the hope remains that authorities will locate Nancy Guthrie without further delay, and that the chilling words of the ransom note — claiming she is “safe but scared” — become a source of reassurance rather than despair. The community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that brings Nancy home safely.
