In 2023, he announced the ‘Civics Seal of Excellence’ program aimed at incentivizing teachers to deepen their understanding of Western Civilization. On Presidents Day, DeSantis highlighted that over 21,000 educators have enrolled in the associated 55-hour course.
The Florida Department of Education outlines that this course provides a robust foundation in American history, focusing on the principles that influenced the nation’s founders during the drafting of key documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The program also includes a $3,000 bonus for teachers who complete the course. DeSantis explained the financial incentive’s role, saying, “These $3,000 bonuses provide a strong incentive for Florida teachers to put in the time necessary.” This approach aims not only to increase participation but also to elevate the quality of civics education across schools in Florida.
DeSantis critiqued modern educational offerings, especially in universities, pointing out a deviation from classical studies. He asserted that “the building blocks of Western civilization” are increasingly neglected in favor of ideological subjects that lack real-world application. He expressed hope that a return to true liberal arts education—which includes the classics—will foster critical thinking skills necessary for future professionals in fields such as law and medicine.
Describing the educational landscape, he noted that materials taught in teacher training programs often fall short of what educators need to effectively instruct their students. The Civics Seal of Excellence program offers what he calls “a training course that you do. It’s 50 hours. You take it online.” Notably, participation has been strong, with over 90% of teachers reporting positive experiences after completing the training. DeSantis claims that the $21 million total in bonuses distributed reinforces his belief in the program’s effectiveness.
