During a recent Senate hearing, Senator James Lankford (R-OK) raised pivotal concerns about the media’s portrayal of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the state’s lack of cooperation in tackling illegal immigration. As Chairman of the Border Management, Federal Workforce, and Regulatory Affairs Subcommittee, Lankford used his platform to confront misinformation directly.

Lankford challenged the narrative that ICE primarily targets individuals without criminal backgrounds. He highlighted that the claim of just 14% of those arrested having a criminal record is misleading. “To correct the record on a couple of things I’ve heard just even in conversation today,” he stated, drawing attention to the actual statistics. “This number of 14% of the folks who have a criminal record that ICE has detained is actually not an accurate number. That number is 14% of violent criminals. That’s murders and rapes. Seventy percent of the folks that are arrested nationwide have a criminal record.”

This exchange encapsulates a crucial point: the media’s simplified statistics often obscure the broader reality. Lankford pointed out the severity of the situations that the media glosses over when discussing these arrests. He remarked, “It’s interesting that, I guess, there are some folks that don’t see as important to arresting folks with five DUIs or that are drug dealers or robbers.” His perspective underscores a frustration with selective focus on crime statistics that do not portray the complete picture regarding illegal immigration.

His constituents appear to share this sentiment. Lankford expressed that the residents of his state wish to see all illegal immigrants with criminal records removed from the country. “So 70% of the folks have been arrested nationwide by ICE in the past year…” he emphasized, hinting at widespread public support for these enforcement actions.

Lankford further acknowledged the dangers faced by ICE agents in the line of duty. He extended gratitude to the men and women of ICE for their sacrifices. “If you pass on a thank you to the men and women that literally put their lives on the line for the sake of the country every single day, I appreciate it,” he said. This statement illuminates the physical and emotional toll on these agents, who often deal with threats to their safety and that of their families.

He noted the alarming increase in hostility toward ICE personnel, referencing incidents where agents have faced death threats and physical assaults. “The very real threats that they face every day has got to wear on them,” Lankford observed, calling for appreciation and acknowledgment of their service.

Lankford’s insistence that ICE operates within legal bounds is equally crucial. He asserted, “There are thousands of arrests that are happening today that are happening by the book.” This statement challenges the assumption that ICE’s practices are unchecked or unlawful, reaffirming that the agency’s methods are grounded in procedure and legal authority.

The Senator’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of accurate representation of both the facts surrounding immigration enforcement and the individuals tasked with upholding these laws. He urges those in the media and in positions of power to better inform the public on the reality of illegal immigration issues and their complex implications.
