Republican Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna recently emphasized the potential for passing the SAVE America Act during her appearance on Fox News. Despite facing strong opposition from Democrats, she is optimistic that the Senate can advance the bill if GOP leaders are willing to employ a less conventional approach. Luna, a prominent advocate for this election integrity legislation, urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to take immediate action on the bill.

Luna noted the urgency of the situation, asserting, “Thune needs to bring it [the SAVE Act] to the floor and it needs to happen immediately.” She firmly believes that public sentiment favors stricter voting regulations, specifically voter ID requirements. The SAVE Act, which recently passed in the House with only one Democratic vote, proposes nationwide photo ID requirements and proof of citizenship for voter registration.

In her remarks, she also highlighted Senator Susan Collins’ support, calling it a “massive piece of legislation” and indicating that bipartisan support could help propel the bill. Luna stressed that forcing a “talking filibuster” could be crucial. This tactic would require Democratic senators to speak continuously to delay the bill, differing from the typical silent filibuster, which often results in bills dying without a vote.

Luna challenged prevailing fears within the GOP regarding confrontation with Democratic opposition. She asserted, “Many senators have said if we do this, the Democrats are going to do this when they regain power.” However, she contended that Democrats have already indicated their intentions regarding immigration and voter registration. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has vocally opposed the SAVE Act, describing it as “like Jim Crow 2.0.”

The implication of a talking filibuster could weigh down legislative priorities, potentially delaying other Senate work for weeks. Luna pointed to support from several Republicans for this approach, including Senators Josh Hawley and Mike Lee, both of whom have pushed for this strategy to secure the passage of the SAVE Act.

Luna’s argument rests on a broader effort to restore faith in the electoral process. “The only way to really secure our country for future generations,” she said, “is to ensure that Americans have faith in the voting process.” She believes that supporting voter ID laws aligns not only with GOP interests but also taps into bipartisan approval from the public, citing a Pew Research Center survey showing strong support for voter ID regulations, including from a substantial number of Democrats.

As the Senate grapples with strategies to advance the SAVE Act, the interplay between Republican resolve and Democratic resistance will be pivotal. Luna’s call for immediate action and her advocacy for traditional democratic processes highlight the ongoing tensions in contemporary American politics regarding election integrity and voter confidence.
