School officials in Lee County, Florida, are taking strong measures against students involved in recent protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Between February 4 and February 6, a substantial number of students—more than 3,600—participated in coordinated walkouts across 14 schools. In response, the district has identified 2,480 students for engaging in conduct deemed disruptive.

Disciplinary actions have already begun, with numerous students suspended for their roles in the protests. The administration clarified that these actions are not a judgment on the students’ political beliefs but are based on violations of the district’s Student Code of Conduct. Such breaches included leaving class without permission, creating unsafe conditions, and defying instructions from school staff.

The nature of the violations is telling. Among the identified infractions, 2,037 students either skipped class or were late; 393 committed safety violations; and 50 showed insubordination or disrespect. Students reportedly left campus during instructional hours, with some even jumping fences. “Unsafe situations” were created for students and staff alike, according to Superintendent Dr. Denise Carlin.

Consequences vary depending on the severity of the actions and the behavioral history of each student. So far, the district has implemented several sanctions, including 134 out-of-school suspensions and 40 in-school suspensions. Other measures involve reassignment to alternative educational settings and various interventions like behavior contracts and the loss of extracurricular privileges.

It is important to note that while many students participated in the protests, the majority—about 96%—remained in class and adhered to school rules. “The safety and security of our schools is our top priority,” Carlin emphasized, highlighting the compliance of most students during the demonstrations. The district continues to review surveillance footage and reports, suggesting that further disciplinary actions may still come as the investigation proceeds.

Speculation has risen that the protests were potentially organized by the teachers’ union, which adds another layer to the ongoing discussion surrounding this incident. Amid these events, the actions taken by Lee County school officials reflect a commitment to maintaining order and discipline within the educational environment, prioritizing student safety over participation in protests.
