New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s condemnation of recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran has garnered attention and criticism. In his statement, he labeled the strikes as a catastrophic escalation in what he termed an “illegal war of aggression.” He expressed concern over civilian casualties and the broader implications of opening a new front of war. Yet, Mamdani’s stance raises questions, especially as he appears to side with the Iranian regime amidst celebrations by Iranian Americans in New York City who praised President Trump for eliminating Ayatollah Khamenei.

This characterization of the airstrikes as “illegal” is factually incorrect. The actions taken by the United States did not arise from a declaration of war but were executed under the president’s war powers. Former Mayor Eric Adams pointed out the absurdity of labeling these defensive actions as unlawful while ignoring Iran’s extensive history of terrorism and repression. “Let me be very clear,” Adams said. He condemned Mamdani’s oversimplification of the situation, emphasizing Iran’s decades-long support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as its actions against peaceful protests.

Mamdani’s criticisms stand in stark contrast to the realities of the regime he defends. Despite the rising death toll in Iran amid the government’s brutal crackdown on dissent, there has been little acknowledgment from the mayor about the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses. His only recorded criticism came during a press conference where he stated his disapproval of the Iranian government’s response to protests, but even that fell short of a direct condemnation.

As of early 2026, estimates of casualties from the Iranian crackdown vary widely, ranging from over 3,000 acknowledged by the Iranian government to significantly higher figures reported by multiple international organizations. The systematic violence employed against unarmed civilians has been documented by various observers, revealing a dire situation for human rights within Iran. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Iran suggested that the civilian death toll may have surpassed 20,000, highlighting the horrific circumstances faced by protestors.

The U.S. strikes targeted the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which serves as a core element of oppression both domestically and abroad. The IRGC has a well-documented track record of repression against Iranian citizens and has been designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the Trump administration. This designation acknowledged the IRGC’s role in funding terrorism and its extensive network of proxy warfare.

Historically, the IRGC has not only crushed dissent within Iran but has also pursued an aggressive foreign policy. It played a significant role in the creation of Hezbollah and has supported Hamas and other militant groups. The IRGC’s actions extend to global operations that have resulted in countless victims and widespread suffering.

Mamdani’s reluctance to denounce the actions of the Iranian leadership and the IRGC comes across as a troubling oversight. His focus on condemning U.S. military actions, while disregarding the historical context of Iranian oppression, reflects a lack of understanding of the broader implications of the conflict. The response from Adams and other critics underscores the need for clarity and accountability regarding the actions and policies of foreign regimes that have inflicted pain for decades.

In a complex geopolitical landscape, leaders must carefully balance their statements. Mamdani’s position represents a dangerous oversimplification of a deeply nuanced and fraught situation. By failing to acknowledge the Iranian regime’s history, he misrepresents the nature of the conflict and its significant impact on countless lives, both within Iran and beyond.
