Senate Majority Leader John Thune recently expressed hope during an interview with Fox News host Martha MacCallum that President Donald Trump will endorse incumbent Senator John Cornyn in his primary race against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. While Thune highlighted Cornyn’s effectiveness as a senator, many conservatives are questioning his prioritization of campaigning for Cornyn over critical discussions on election integrity, specifically regarding the SAVE Act.

In his interview, Thune stated, “I’ve spoken with the president already today about Texas, and I’m certainly hopeful… John Cornyn… represents by far our very best hope of making sure that South Texas stays red in November.” Thune’s praise for Cornyn frames him as a vital asset for Texas Republicans. Cornyn’s incumbency and history are cast as reasons for confidence in his success against Paxton.

However, this optimistic tone contrasts with the response Thune received from the conservative base. Critics pointedly chastise Thune for what they see as inaction on election integrity. One user sharply criticized him, stating, “Thune, is this the game: Delay delay delay… your Dem and Rino buddies can then claim it’s too burdensome administratively… and then you can claim that you got the bill passed!” This sentiment reveals deep frustration among conservatives who view Thune’s focus on Cornyn as a distraction from the urgent issue of securing elections.

When pressed by MacCallum on whether a formal endorsement from Trump is imminent, Thune maintained a level of ambiguity, neither confirming nor denying details of his conversations with the president. He stated, “Well, I’m not going to characterize that conversation… but I think it’s fair to say that he’s paying a lot of attention.” His evasiveness only fueled skepticism.

Further complicating the narrative, some comments on the interview video were particularly forceful in their condemnation of Thune’s leadership. One individual conveyed profound disappointment, suggesting that Thune ought to prioritize the SAVE Act over personal political agendas, saying, “John Thune doesn’t have time to secure our elections, but he does have time to go on Fox News and try to save the political life of his corrupt RINO friend John Cornyn.”

Conservative distrust of establishment figures in the Republican Party continues to energize critiques of Thune. The juxtaposition of his support for Cornyn against the pressing need for election reform showcases the widening rift between grassroots conservatives and Senate leadership. In the eyes of many, Thune’s public persona as a protector of conservative values is being undermined by his actions—or lack thereof—regarding the SAVE Act.

Thune’s optimistic outlook for Cornyn, bolstered by the possibility of a presidential endorsement, does not seem to resonate with a base that craves tangible action on election integrity. The call for accountability in leadership grows louder as conservatives demand that their representatives prioritize the fundamental issues affecting their electoral prospects over personal loyalties and political strategies.
