Senator John Cornyn’s record is increasingly under scrutiny as he faces a primary battle against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. With re-election on the line, the GOP establishment has poured an astonishing $70 million into Cornyn’s campaign, making this one of the most expensive races in American history. This massive spending aims to craft a narrative depicting Cornyn as a staunch supporter of President Trump and his America First agenda.

However, the campaign’s ads, produced by Washington insiders, mask a much more complicated history. Critics argue that Cornyn’s actions over the years betray the very conservative principles he now claims to uphold. For more than a decade, he has often acted in ways that seem to undermine Trump’s agenda. For instance, during pivotal moments when radical Democrats sought to cripple Trump, Cornyn took an adversarial stance against him.

According to Breitbart News, when interviewed about Trump’s legal troubles, Cornyn stated, “He’s created a circumstance for himself, which is I think very, very serious.” Such remarks suggest a reluctance to fully embrace Trump amidst a critical rallying cry from the conservative base. Cornyn also expressed reservations about Republicans’ inquiries into the Manhattan DA’s case against Trump, urging the party to focus on the agenda for which they were elected. This raises questions about his commitment to the party’s values.

Further illustrating Cornyn’s discomfort with Trump, he indicated that he doesn’t believe Trump could win another presidential race. His remarks in 2023 about the need for an alternative to Trump, claiming “his time had passed him by,” reflect a significant disconnect with the sentiments of many Texas Republicans who remain loyal to Trump. Cornyn emphasized, “In politics, unless you can win an election you’re pretty much irrelevant.” These statements reveal a relentless practicality from Cornyn, perhaps at odds with the more fervent loyalty some constituents feel toward Trump.

Moreover, Cornyn’s criticisms extend to key policy issues, particularly regarding border security. His dismissal of building a wall—a core component of Trump’s platform—has sparked frustration among conservatives. Cornyn labeled the notion as “naive,” questioning the viability of a physical barrier to control immigration. His assertion that the “people of Texas would not be supportive of the measure” shows a willingness to align with more moderate stances rather than rally behind the party’s hardline approaches.

Adding to the controversy, Cornyn’s support for a significant gun control bill during Biden’s administration put him in direct opposition to Trump’s veteran position on the Second Amendment. Trump himself warned that this legislation could start a process to “TAKE YOUR GUNS AWAY.” Cornyn’s vote earned him praise from Biden, highlighting a bipartisan collaboration that conservatives might find unsettling.

The primary contest between Cornyn and Paxton is set for May 26, 2024. As the race heats up, the effectiveness of the establishment’s efforts to reshape Cornyn’s image remains to be seen. Whether his past actions will haunt him as he attempts to maintain his Senate seat is a pivotal question in this contentious campaign.
