Nancy Mace from South Carolina announced that she had “jumped in to assist” in evacuation efforts due to the escalating conflict involving Israel and Iran. Her journey to the Middle East began after she learned a South Carolina family found themselves trapped amid the chaos. Mace expressed urgency regarding her role, stating, “When your people are stranded in a war zone, the only answer worthy of the office, worthy of our state, worthy of our country, is to get them out.”
Mace’s proactive approach reflects a deep sense of responsibility for her constituents, especially as she campaigns for the governorship of South Carolina. After ensuring the safe return of the initial family, Mace collaborated with Grey Bull Rescue, a Florida-based crisis response organization led by military veterans, to assist more Americans facing similar dire circumstances. The recent conflict had forced tens of thousands of U.S. citizens to seek exits from the Middle East amid widespread cancellations and airspace blockages caused by Iranian counterstrikes.
In her efforts, Mace coordinated with the State Department to charter a flight specifically for those stranded. Privately initiated rescue missions have gained significance amidst the chaos, with Grey Bull Rescue playing a pivotal role in logistics and operations. As a result of these decisive actions, Mace and 155 Americans, including 11 infants, successfully evacuated from Israel on a flight that reached Greece. “They had the people but didn’t have the plane. I jumped in to assist,” Mace remarked, expressing gratitude for the experience and the lessons learned during the ordeal. Her words reflect a personal transformation and a commitment to serve that goes beyond political ambition.
Bryan Stern, the founder and chairman of Grey Bull Rescue, commended Mace’s involvement, stating, “Congresswoman Mace was fully embedded with our team, not to watch, but to work to save lives.” This assertion highlights the collaborative efforts between legislators and non-profit organizations in times of crisis. Grey Bull Rescue has highlighted its ongoing commitment to American safety, having been involved in evacuating over 300 Americans from Israel since mid-October. Their mission has extended beyond this conflict, previously assisting citizens escaping cartel violence in Mexico and facilitating the removal of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
According to the State Department, over 43,000 Americans have departed the Middle East since the initiation of Operation Epic Fury at the end of February. More than half of these individuals received direct support from the U.S. government, indicating a robust response despite the criticism lodged against the State Department for unclear communications and ineffective initial guidance to those stranded in the area.
