Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri has proposed a bill aimed at banning the abortion pill, mifepristone, which he claims poses serious risks to women’s health. “The science is clear: the chemical abortion drug is inherently dangerous to women and prone to abuse,” he stated in a recent announcement. This tough stance reflects ongoing concerns regarding the pharmaceutical practices surrounding abortion and the perceived lack of regulation.

Hawley’s bill intends not only to prohibit the use of mifepristone but also to enable women to pursue legal action against its manufacturers. He emphasized the need for congressional action to safeguard women’s health, asserting: “Congress must act now to protect the health and safety of women.” This proactive approach aims to hold companies accountable for the adverse effects associated with the drug.

Rep. Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee has aligned herself with this effort by introducing a parallel bill in the House. She highlighted increasing evidence that directly counters previous federal assessments on the drug’s safety: “Evidence now suggests that the real-world risks to women are far greater than the federal government has acknowledged.” Harshbarger’s commitment to ensuring women’s health remains free from political influence adds weight to the argument for regulatory reform.

According to the release from Hawley’s office, serious health complications occur in nearly 11 percent of women who use mifepristone within 45 days. Hawley has raised alarms about the drug’s unregulated status, noting that its capsule form renders it susceptible to misuse. “Over the years, one liberal administration after another… removed almost all of the safety protocols around mifepristone,” he said, placing the responsibility for current safety issues on previous administrations.

Eyewitness accounts from women who have taken the drug have further underscored its dangers. One woman described severe complications: “I developed a severe infection behind my uterus that went undetected until it became life-threatening.” Her harrowing experience, which necessitated life support and an eventual partial hysterectomy, serves as a stark reminder of the potential physical toll of mifepristone.

Pro-life advocates lauded Hawley’s proposal. Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, pointed out that the COVID-era policies that enabled mail-order abortions have contributed to a rise in abortion numbers after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. He noted the ease of access to abortion drugs directly to homes, even in states where abortion laws are more restrictive.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, identified mail-order abortion drugs as a significant challenge to state-level efforts to regulate abortion. She stated: “The number 1 factor making abortion America’s top cause of death is mail-order abortion drugs.” Dannenfelser’s claims emphasize the urgent need to address the implications of telemedicine and pharmaceuticals in abortion access.

Lila Rose, founder of Live Action, echoed the call for action, describing the bill as overdue. Her perspective paints a grim picture of the abortion industry’s dealings with mifepristone. She argues that the abortion pill has facilitated a system that neglects women’s health in pursuit of profit. “For years, the abortion lobby has marketed these drugs as safe and easy while concealing the truth,” she said, drawing attention to the significant health risks that often accompany the procedure.

Sen. Hawley previously introduced this bill last year, but it did not advance. His renewed initiative reflects a persistent legislative focus on the abortion pill and underscores the continuing debate surrounding reproductive health policies in the United States. Through this proposed legislation, he aims to provoke further discussion on the ethics and regulations impacting women’s healthcare.
