Michael Allen is taking a strong stance against a proposed bill in Colorado that seeks to legalize prostitution. As the Republican candidate for attorney general, he expressed disbelief over the initiative, stating it would significantly increase the risks of human trafficking in the state. “It’s hard for me to even decipher why they’ve decided this is the time and place to introduce a radical bill like this,” he remarked in an interview. His surprising response highlights the contentious nature of the legislation, introduced by Democratic lawmakers, which aims to decriminalize adult commercial sexual activity.
Allen argues that this bill could position Colorado as the leading state in legalized prostitution, surpassing Nevada, where the practice is regulated. He stated, “I was shocked. It doesn’t make any sense to me.” His disapproval extends to the potential consequences he believes the proposal could bring, particularly regarding Colorado’s ongoing struggles with crime and budget deficits. Allen insists that the legislation does not address existing issues and could grant criminals more freedom: “It is, frankly, very appalling to me that we’ve got four members of the left-leaning Democrat legislature who thought it would be a good idea to just open the floodgates and let these criminal actors run free without any repercussions.”
While the bill currently seems to be stalled in the legislature, Allen emphasized that it reflects a broader trend he sees in Democratic policies that fail to support the citizens of Colorado. He foresees dire outcomes if the bill were to pass, predicting “continued depravity in the state of Colorado.” He pointed out that prostitution is closely related to human trafficking, making his concern even more pressing: “Prostitution is a natural outgrowth of human trafficking. The links are undeniable.”
Addressing specific issues within Colorado, Allen noted the state’s vulnerabilities due to its geography. With two major travel corridors running through it, he highlighted the Denver metro area as a significant hub for human trafficking. According to data from the Common Sense Institute, Colorado has reached record highs in human trafficking incidents, with a staggering 79% of these crimes linked to commercial sexual activity.
As a current district attorney, Allen is among the few Republican contenders aiming to reclaim a top state office that has been under Democratic control for over a decade. He is optimistic that voters are ready for a change after nearly ten years of what he describes as “devastatingly bad criminal justice reform.” He contends that the role of attorney general is critical in addressing the rampant issues facing Colorado, particularly in terms of criminal activity linked to trafficking.
“I believe the upcoming midterm election in Colorado will be pivotal,” Allen stated. He is determined that the attorney general’s office should take a stronger and more effective approach to combat crime. “We need to have a better, stronger, and more effective posture from our Colorado Attorney General’s Office to combat criminal activity that is, frankly, affecting the entire state of Colorado,” he asserted. Allen’s remarks underscore his commitment to addressing these pressing challenges should he win the election.
