Peter Schweizer recently shed light on the troubling phenomenon of birth tourism before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. This practice, where pregnant women travel to other countries to give birth for citizenship, has gained attention, particularly concerning China’s strategic use of it to undermine U.S. interests.

Schweizer, a senior contributor for Breitbart News and author of “The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon,” shared alarming statistics. He noted that over 1,000 companies in China are dedicated exclusively to helping women give birth in the United States. “In China alone, we have identified more than 1,000 birth tourism companies that are almost exclusively focused on the United States,” he said. His testimony pointed to a significant gap in data, as he emphasized that the U.S. government lacks a centralized system to track these births. “Our federal government does not track this information because there is no centralized collection of information on the nationality of parents who are giving birth,” Schweizer explained.

While the U.S. remains in the dark, China has its own estimates. Schweizer stated that about 50,000 Chinese citizens a year give birth in the U.S. or its territories like Saipan. “China, however, has done the estimates themselves and the numbers are eye-popping,” he added. He referenced Professor Salvatore Babones, who suggested the number could be as high as 100,000 annually. A 2018 study even estimated that 180,000 Chinese women gave birth in the U.S. that year. The uncertainty surrounding these figures raises serious concerns about the implications of such practices on American society and citizenship.

Schweizer’s testimony highlighted a startling conclusion: if these trends continue, nearly 1 million individuals categorized as U.S. citizens are currently being raised in China, a significant issue given the rising tensions between the two nations. The motivations behind this phenomenon are not benign. Schweizer pointed out that those utilizing birth tourism services are often not political dissidents; rather, they are “military officers, people from the Ministry of Propaganda, people that are high-ranking officials in the Chinese Communist Party.” This paints a picture of a concerted effort by the Chinese elite to exploit American citizenship laws to their advantage.

His insights were further elaborated during a January 2026 appearance on the “Ingraham Angle.” Schweizer explained how the Chinese Communist Party has promoted birth tourism since 2011, urging their elite to take advantage of the U.S. 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to those born on U.S. soil. “This massive industry has evolved, primarily in California, also in China, where people in China will pay $60,000 or so,” he told Rachel Campos-Duffy, who stood in for Laura Ingraham. “They will fly to the United States… they will lie on their visa application… They say we’re not going to have a child. We’re just here as tourists.”

This strategy not only highlights a glaring loophole but also raises questions about national security and the integrity of American citizenship. As Schweizer noted, when these children reach adulthood, they will hold U.S. citizenship despite having been raised under China’s communist regime. This situation presents a profound challenge that U.S. policymakers must address.

The testimony provided by Schweizer and the subsequent discussions emphasize the urgent need for better monitoring of birth tourism and a reevaluation of immigration policies related to birthright citizenship. In a world where geopolitical tensions are conspicuous, the ramifications of unchecked practices like these could shape the future of American society and its national identity.
